You really think Microsoft would like to show the world they run
        on FreeBSD?

Check google and you'll find several articles about it from
credible established news sources when it leaked out.

Hotmail and FTP server from Microsoft.com run on FreeBSD.

Take a look at the systems that basically run the internet.
        it's 100% unix......simply because it's free? routers,
switches, NOC's, fiber equipment ALL run Unix based OS.

Microsoft makes a damn fine workstation or network
server in a corperate environment. It's build just to do that.
And it does it pretty well but in no way can it match stability
performance, security, speed with unix servers.

Anyone with half a brain will admit this.

to userfriendlieness <= is that a word?

Fuck it I'm off to bed.....Have fun ladies!

Actually, just wait for Windows Server 2003 Web Edition...

It's a stripped down version for running just Web Applications...

None of the other junk that is really never needed in a Web enviroment is stripped out

            A LOT cheaper too

free bsd is by far the best choice in OS for a server today.

I used to couple windows and UNIX machines because windows was great for streaming and unreliable otherwise. You can make a hybrid system where windows streams the files off your UNIX machine leaving your website and scripts where they belong on a UNIX machine.

Those are the front end servers. The back end AFAIK is on BSD as they had a terrible time converting the infrastructure and they want to impress people running the tests as you just did.

                                        Sandrawang,

If you decide to go back to Unix(preferably FreeBSD), you can use the Darwin Streaming Server available at the Apple website.

                                        Very easy to install/configure.

If you decide to go back to Unix(preferably FreeBSD), you can use the Darwin Streaming Server available at the Apple website.

                                              Very easy to install/configure.

Hi, SmashFace this looks interesting too, I looked at their site. Seems like it's free, but that sounds too good to be true... Or?

                                              - Will this system stream all kinds of files, .wmv also?

                                              - Is it possible to keep members from downloading the clips on this system?

                                              - And can it run on my dedicated webserver without "crashing" with other stuff on the server?

I have many OS's running in our own farms. We have some solaris, some linux, some freebsd, and win2k. I'll tell you the 2k boxes are quite stable. I've had one that was running for almost a full year before I remembered it was still serving and probably needed some updating.

I can say this for Windows. It's FAST. REALLY REALLY fast. From what I have seen you can kick the crap out of any tweaked out apache with a simple out of the box 2k. It laughs at apache's open connection issue.

I sat throught a .NET 2003 demo at comdex and the guy said that a dual proc 2.4 could hit out 12,000 static hits a second. Out of the box. I think only Zeus can come near that. He also said drop in another two chips and you're at 16,500 hits a second. That's pretty fast.

If you plan to run paysites on windows you NEED a pricy bit of software called WebQuota. It's THE software to deal with passwords on windows. Nothing is even close to it. I've been running that software since 1997 and it's still really the only game in town.

To do a live webcam show you pretty much need to get a windows server and use windows media. There are other ways to do it but they suck.

My advice to you is to join one of the cam networks and use their media servers. By doing that you also get all their girls on your site (usually like 30 girls and it's up 7 nights a week) - AND you get THEM to pay the video feed hosting bill. So you get good daily live content, you save in hosting, and you even get to upsell someone else's members on your site.

                                                  SandraWang,

VirtuMike gave you a brilliant idea about joining one of the cam networks. Two thumbs up!

                                                  As far as movies...

The most common reasons to stream movies vs. letting your members to download them are 1) copyright protection 2) hotlink protection

As someone mentioned earlier, it is very difficult to protect your movies agains copyright violations. Most common thing to do is to watermark your movies with your domain. This way if someone will steal and post your movies on their sites, the surfers may type in your domain to see where they originally came from.

As far as hotlink protection, we at AntiHotLinking.com will be happy to accomodate your needs. :-) if you decide to make your movies downloadable or "stream" them via ActivX plugins from your pages.

Lastly, two most commonly used formats for movies are MPEG and WMV. If you decide to use AVI(DivX), Real Media or QuickTime you will run into compatibility issues with your members. Everyone can play MPEG; every Windows user can play WMV. For the other formats, your surfers will have to download codecs, install plugins, and download players. And if you convert your movies to MPEG or WMV with correct settings, there is no advatage to use .avi .rm or .mov

not for a while, besides my desktop. but why did microsoft build a system that was inherently flawed?

no, i stay very, very far away from M$ servers. partly due to my experience with their reliability, party due to their licensing, etc etc.

i've never seen a windows box be more reliable than a *nix box, even crappy ones. the most reliable box i've ever owned out of any machine is an IBM 486SLC2 50 laptop with FreeBSD 2.2.6. that's combined with servers and desktops. still purrs like a kitten.

hell, you want something that's powerful? go get yersef an as/400. that's something not-*nix that's truly impressive

and yes, it still makes me wonder, if windows is so damn great, why is *nix the choice of hosts/isps? i know a lot of the guys in the business, and they won't touch a windows box unless mandatory

no, i stay very, very far away from M$ servers. partly due to my experience with their reliability, party due to their licensing, etc etc.

i've never seen a windows box be more reliable than a *nix box, even crappy ones. the most reliable box i've ever owned out of any machine is an IBM 486SLC2 50 laptop with FreeBSD 2.2.6. that's combined with servers and desktops. still purrs like a kitten.

hell, you want something that's powerful? go get yersef an as/400. that's something not-*nix that's truly impressive

and yes, it still makes me wonder, if windows is so damn great, why is *nix the choice of hosts/isps? i know a lot of the guys in the business, and they won't touch a windows box unless mandatory

I seriously think the reason why so many people use Unix is becuse of the bad impression Windows NT made.

NT was basically a very bad Beta for Windows 2000.

A tweeked out W2K/2003 box can kick some serious ass though.

windows in general leaves a bad taste in my mouth. just a lot of things that seem like they should work, and they don't, or it makes it a hassle to do a lot of things.

i used to really like 2000, but the desktop version really irked me. when it crashed, it CRASHED and there was no bringing it back

and the troubleshooting process was so fucking wierd. you'd go through the install, and it'd say "advanced mode" or whatever and the *only* thing it would ever let me do was copy files from the cd to the hard drive. ok, if it's so advanced, why would it only let me do the exact thing that the automated setup did? i wouldn't even let me be in other directories in the system then.

there's just so many quirky things with windows. with unix, you can get in, get things done, and get the fuck out. and, do it reliably.

even xp, which i think is their most reliable product to date (i've not used any .net products), is still really screwy. it's not nearly as reliable as any *nix box. and, it takes so much freaking resources it's insane. when i installed xp i had to get a faster processor just to run the same software with 98/2000. and now it keeps getting this crazy quirk that all of the sudden it decides none of my browsers can access the internet... and does it until i reboot or release/renew.

i'll give them credit though, m$ made good software for the masses, with most of the stuff pretty easy to do. granted *nix can be a lot more difficult to set up, but once it's there, it's there for good

It makes me laugh some Nix peoples reactions to windows these days. It's like they were indoctrinated at birth and can't get over it.

                                                                                  - Will this system stream all kinds of files, .wmv also?

                                                                                  - Is it possible to keep members from downloading the clips on this system?

                                                                                  - And can it run on my dedicated webserver without "crashing" with other stuff on the server?
I only used this with MP3 streaming and it worked well. I didnt test it under a heavy load though.

It supports MPEG-4 and Quicktime, no Windows Media or Real support.

As for protecting the clips, I dont think you can go directly to the file and save it. But there is probably some hack which allows you to archive a stream.

                                                                                  Hope this helps, SF

Yesterday I decided to tell my host to take away Windows, and reinstall my server to Unix, but haven't got any response yet, so I'm not sure what's happening. After reading all the replies in this thread, I am getting more and more confused what OS would be best for me... Now I got some VERY good reasons to use Windows too... Gah

VirtuMike gave me some very good reasons... That made me think. Hehe yes actually your Got Jizz content also looks very tempting ;)

I understand there will always be arguings between Windows and *nix lovers, and both sides are making good resons why their system is the best.

The main reason I think Unix will be best for me, is that I have very little knowledge about runnning servers, so I am dependent on the support I get from my hosting if troubble shows up. And since they tell me they have little experience with Windows, but they have very good experience with Unix, I feel that I would be more relaxed to run an OS that they could give me the best support on. I am so scared to fuck up my site....

To those who recommend joining a CamNetwork, I am already in a CamNetwork (Camz), and I'm very satisfied with them. They use Windows Streaming. But I don't want to send my members over to their site in every camshow I do, I want to do some camshows for my own members only too, that makes them feel more important and closer to me.

X3m, I would love to hear more about your AntiHotLink system...

I see you tell me it's no use to try to keep my videoclips 100% protected, since they will get spread sooner or later anyway. So maybe I should just forget the whole streaming thing, and let them download everything... Cuz yes, the ONLY reason I wanted streaming, is that I wanted to keep my content protected...
But then I will put a big URL on the bottom of each video at least... Is there some other things I can do with them to keep an eye on where my content is, and if someone has stolen my content, using it on their paysite for example? Thats my worst scenario...

Regarding the format of the videoclips, if I let them download it all: You say that .wmv is the only GOOD quality, but .mpg is the only format everyone can see? I hear the surfers love mpgs...
                                                                                      What format should I use?

Security of my site is ofcourse very important, and I see lots of you say Windows have bad security compared to Unix, and those who have good knowledge about Windows say the opposite. But since my host have their best experience with Unix, I would think they could set up better security with Unix, than with Windows, since they are not windows experts.

AHL is used by several our customers to protect movies in members areas. Please get in touch with me at [email protected] so we can talk about the specifics of your setup if you will decide to go with the downloadable movies. Actually, ISPrime techs have already installed AHL for several of their clients and can probably do it for you too.

                                                                                            AS far as formats...

Normally, for promotion you should probably stay with MPEG. It's accepted at all MGP's, TGP's and will be viewed by everybody.

For your members area, you can use MPEGS as well, but WMV's will allow you to encode your movies with smaller file sizes for comparable quality.

A good site to get your feet wet in movie editing is: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/

well, the argument for Mpegs isn't as good as it used to be... since 90% or more of your surfers are going to be on Windows boxes, the .Wmv format is easy for near all of your visitors to use, since the Windows Media Player will automatically download and install any needed codecs to the surfers computer... this is where Divx and some of the other formats start to look unattractive, since the members must install some external software, whatever it is (Divx, RM, etc.)... since .Wmv offers good quality and filesize, we always use it w/ our paysites... i don't think Mpeg offers much benefit these days as compared to a few years ago..
...promise her a defamation, tell her where the rain will fall..

Since there is no current device to intercept buffer overflows that programmers [mis]design in their code, a cracker can manipulate both to quadratically improve his odds of access. Add to that windows inept security model where everything runs as the superuser, and you have a security hole so wide the only thing missing is invitations.

Talk to Camz and find out if they'll let you run shows off the network. They also do amateurhosting.com and they're pretty good with the streaming video thing. My guess is that Dan or Robb will not have a problem picking up your video hosting. Be sure to let them know that I referred you and you'll probably get a discount. They charge by the gig so you might do really well there on your private show. There really isn't a great reason why you should put all of your stuff on one server, besides cost.
