Religion is a very good way of teaching the "uneducated masses" and always has been, as you say, it ensures that the morals and values that are essential in societal living are deeply ingrained into their minds.

The basis for this type of moral imperative is not so much purely logical rationality, as it is pragmatic rationality. Ofcourse, that is based on the premise that there is no objective morality anyway, and that morality is comprised by an arbitrary set of guidelines that are mainly of pragmatic value. Then again, that's the only theory that makes sense scientifically and doesn't rely on a very speculative metaphycics.
