It's too bad. What I don't get is how these people can have such fucked up priorities? This guy has three kids, yet he's needlessly throwing his life away to get the "scoop" on the news. Sounds like a plan. You couldn't pay me enough to risk making my children motherless. Wonder if they will ever forgive him in their hearts? -

They save people's lives and their jobs are tangibly useful. Being a "reporter at the front lines" serves little purpose aside from contributing to propeganda. Wars were reported just fine before "embeded" reporters came along. Half the time they can't say what's up anyways (for obvious reasons) so over half of what they say is "I can't tell you..." The point of this would be?Originally posted by stocktrader23

There is a story there and is being reported on, just not live. It will be around forever and the footage will be released after the war is over.Originally posted by LadyMischief

Saving peoples lives may be true but how many cops are killed by a crackhead on a traffic stop? They have kids too. With the low number of deaths our troops have seen I would say there are a few jobs that are alot more dangerous. I just pointed out a couple everyone had heard of. I doubt anybody's family would be happier their dad/husband/wife were killed reporting a war or by a dipshit hopped up on drugs. IMO

Having embedded reporters can help keep troop's morale up. Although it can also be a distraction, troops know that what they're doing is being seen live back home, and can provide some extra motivation.Originally posted by LadyMischief

On the downside, an inexperienced reporter can just simply get in the way of things or (in the case of Geraldo) actually risk lives.

Well that would be another downfall of embeded reporting. Not only that, but I'm sure that the Iraq government is watching too.. Now although the Iraqi regime looks set to fall..what if it was a country that wasn't so... well "stupid" strategically.. and how many soldiers have died because the Iraqis figure out what was going on by watching an embeded report?Originally posted by Gman.357

I guess my point is, especially with this war, some news can be TOO MUCH news. When is enough enough? How much should people REALLY know? The people of america and the world didn't have embeded reporters in world war two, or vietnam, or korea reporting live from the front lines 24/7... seems to me that people managed to get the news irregardless. It seems a shame and rather sad that people are throwing away their lives for what.. sensationalism? They certainly aren't there to report anything but the "glories" of war and the victory of the coalition. They aren't reporting "useful" news to people, or are they? I'm sure the Iraqis are grateful for every tidbit they learn from CNN.Comment

The technology did not exist to have embedded real time reporting. There were journalists in the Second World War, Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict that were embedded with military units, up front under fire and filming the action. Many were killed, the famous, as well as the not so famous.Originally posted by LadyMischief

damn - that is tragic. He was very good at what he did, would have been a great successor to Tom Brokaw at NBC. The heir apparent, Brian Williams, is an imbecile.
pulmonary embolism? i'm sure what he's been through the last couple of weeks contributed to it happening.

And what do you consider "useful" news about the war? The kind of shit Al Jazeera tends to spew out? That's as much (if not MORE) sensationalized propeganda than CNN and their embedded reporters can ever cook up. Just for the other team.

I agree, people do deserve to know what's going on. But a few days delay never hurt anyone, did it? There's not any scruples anymore as far as reporting and journalism. Telling the story, telling the truth is important. But timing can be key as far as letting out TOO much.. Didn't someone already get fired for giving out TOO much information? Wonder if the Iraqi jumped on that right away or waited a whole 10 minutes. Do you see where I'm coming from with this? bah.. not worth explaining myself blue in the face over :POriginally posted by Joe Sixpack

ALL news, if it is true, is USEFUL news. I'm talking timing and waste.. I kind of wonder, honestly, how many soldiers have died in a round-about way because of the real-time reports of these embeded reporters? Sure.. "I cannot reveal my position", but any dumb nuts who's lived their whole life there recognized that street or that particular oasis.. C'mon. You can't tell me the Iraqis aren't using at least some of what they see reported "life 24/7" to their advantage.Originally posted by Gman.357

How much is too much? Let the people decide. So far, Americans are eating it up. Not to soften the realities of war, but Americans are nosey. We like our info LIVE and up front.
Like anything else, if you don't like, don't watch. But as far as giving the enemy important info... nah. Not really an issue. The reporters are kept under strict guidlines on what they can and can not report.
The critical operations (special ops) don't get carried out with embedded reporters for obvious reasons. And I'm sure they never will.

If they had the slightest concern that an operation they were engaged in on any given hour, or day may be helpful to the enemy, they would not allow real time reporting during that operation. The report would have to be released at the military's descretion.Originally posted by LadyMischief

Counter Intelligence. I would imagine much of what is reported on the news is supposed to be heard by the enemy. i.e. We're 50 miles from Baghdad, when we are really alot closer. You can believe they want Saddam and his crew to watch our news and that could be a major reason some things are downplayed and some are sensationalized.Originally posted by LadyMischief

When you stay in one position for too long you can develop blood clots. That's why for example they say don't sit in an airplane seat the whole trip, get up and stretch, same thing sitting on the Net all day or night.
Being cooped up in those tanks for extended hours he might have had this happen as a result.
