I know this discussion has been back and forth 1000x, but here's my two cents on the merchant account vs. 3rd party processing issue:
Ok.. if you go with your own merchant account, expect to pay:
1. Approx 3-4% discount rate from the merchant bank itself.
2. Approx 1.5% + .30 per transaction with an interface processor.
So you're thinking... gee, even at the high side 5.5% sounds a lot better than 14.5%! And yeah... it sure as shit does sound better, but remember this:
YOU will be solely responsible for all your customer service. If you want to do a partnership program down the road, you'll have to find some kind of 3rd party software to do this, which isn't a major deal.. maybe a few hundred bucks. But then YOU will be solely responsible for cutting checks to webmasters and all that fun stuff.
And then let's not even get into the chargeback issue.. that's a whole other world of shit that YOU will be responsible for if you're dealing with your own merchant account.
So when you weigh both sides of the merchant account vs. 3rd party, you're almost better off going with 3rd party simply for ease of use.
Again.. just my two cents, but I'm sure others that have done both sides will agree.
