    cogent co-lo

I noticed that cogent co-location is $3k for 100megs with 1 rack but the bw alone is only $1k for 100megs - anyone know what are other hosts are charging for co-location using cogent bw?

What is the best mix/blend between cogent b/w and co-location? is it doing both with cogent? Or another combination is better?

Cogent doesn't sell bandwidth for $1000/100mbits.. not really. Not unless you are going to be in a situation where your PULLING a lot, like you own an office complex/building or a aparment complex etc.. where there will be end users surfing the web and PULLING down data.

For everyone else.. Cogent bandwidth is $3000/100mbits for resellers, or anyone thats going to be hosting/serving anything.

They give you a rack in some of their datacenters, but if you ever need more racks, the pricing is through the roof. And I think your pretty limited on the carriers (if they even have/allow other carriers) in their datacenters.

The $1000 is between two fixed locations or on the metrolink AFAIK. If your want people to see your pages worldwide you need the $3000 plan + a router + an admin for the router + multihoming and a rack.

You dont need multihoming, or a router. I think within cogents network you can just use a switch.

Im can set you up w/ 50 mbit committments of cogent BW with a dedicated PIII box, 1 gig ram @ 2k $ a month + 250 bucks one time setup.

All overage beyond the 50 mbit commitment is billed ON AVERAGE MTRG stats. So if you push like 70/80 mbit a month average billing this comes out to 12 cents per gigabyte transferred.

The cool thing is that Cogent can sell an unlimited amount of 100mb uplinks. The problem is that they don't add any BW to their network, they just keep diluting the same pipes. That's why they are so slow.

Lensman, that's interesting. are you sure in that case they already serve over their physical capacity? Are they continuesly throtelled?

Yep. Plus I've been told that your sites won't be reachable globally, because they don't have routing from some some overseas countries.

Not true, they keep expanding their datacenters and are working on the service the whole time. They are not getting any slower.

You have been told wrong, or your information is seriously outdated. If you only knew how many adult sites use cogent. It's the best bw you can get when it comes to price/reliability ratio, a lot better than some providers that charge more (like Yipes). It's hosting providers that give cogent a bad name, because it really isn't that bad.

To the topic starter, 1 rack with 100mbit? Why, are you going to pull over 10,000gb/mo on only 1 server? In that case you can contact me (see sig) and we can probably do it cheaper on a dedicated P4 or a dual Xeon.

Actully, Lens is on the money. I think the only folks you will see defend Cogent are those that have no other choice but to use it.

With cogent, it really is get what you pay for.

You couldn't pay me to use cogent on my network.

Funny then how we are having over 99% uptime with our cogent servers nowadays. And we now also have other bandwith available by the way.

99% uptime.. sure.. I can believe that your link state has been up 99% of the time. But I also believe that IP transit to and from cogent absolutely sucks, and the thing is, I think you know that.

What other connections do you have?

It looks like you only have cogent.

Try reading what is posted here or at WHT and then try and make that statement. Nevermind what your account rep told you.

Their peering is shit... everyone they peer with wants to a) kick them off or b) is going to kick them off.

Hell I think I was even reading that rackshack is going to get rid of them?

I would never put a paysite on Cogent....

That's been my main beef since Cogent bought NetRail

99% .. that gives you like 36 hours of downtime? haha .. i would be pissed of..

cogentco in fact had mad issues with AOL not to long ago where all AOL surfers had mad "issues" reaching anything on the cogentco network. they didnt got it solved till they bought bandwidth from another peer to reach aol. and to Lensmans post about oversea connections - cogentco has mainly a US network and even if they have peerings with other networks their oversea connections are poor and have issues most of the time. the reason why a lot adult sites are with them is the price - if you run a freehost and block certain contries at all - why should you care about that they reach your websites at all.. if price is everything you are concerned with - think about it again .. every visitor you are loosing ...

We have Cogent pipes at LibidoNetworks and mostly market it for TGP and AVS. I have customers in Europe and they've never had major problems with their Cogent based bandwith. Customers often want to save money, but I always tell them that a good membership site should be on premium bandwith and is worth the extra money. Our premium bandwith is through Internap and is 85 cents a gig, compared to Cogent's 40 cents a gig.

If your looking to do a ton of traffic we have a great deal.

20,000 Gigs a month for 3k (this is for co-loc). That breaks down to roughly 30 gigs an hour and under 17 cents a gig. This is Cogent only bandwith and really for people doing tons of TGP/AVS.

Our datacenter is in downtown LA.

Contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

hehe nice .. like a ping without any additional information means anything. if you are on the cogentco network this ping would be shit .. if you are somewhere in europe it would be to nice.

What is the best mix/blend between cogent b/w and co-location? is it doing both with cogent? Or another combination is better?
If you are truly sold on using a cogent line you should really be talking to Mark Heninger from DreamTank.

They are in the same building as Cogent in Downtown LA (707 Wilshire) By racking at DreamTank you can get even better performance from you r Cogent line because you have zero hops. DreamTank also has incredible peering relationships and has diverse pathway to One Wilshire.

cogentco in fact had mad issues with AOL not to long ago where all AOL surfers had mad "issues" reaching anything on the cogentco network. they didnt got it solved till they bought bandwidth from another peer to reach aol. and to Lensmans post about oversea connections - cogentco has mainly a US network and even if they have peerings with other networks their oversea connections are poor and have issues most of the time. the reason why a lot adult sites are with them is the price - if you run a freehost and block certain contries at all - why should you care about that they reach your websites at all.. if price is everything you are concerned with - think about it again .. every visitor you are loosing ...
36 hours? Where did that come from? It's less than 3 hours per month.

And besides we have OVER 99% uptime (like i said) since I've been a partner at Vibehosting. The network only went down on me ONCE, and that was during maintainance on it. We had been notified about it earlier.

Sure, cogent has had a lot of problems years ago, it's all fixed now. And we have also used Verio and Williams, and Yipes. They all were a lot worse compared to the cogent datacenter we are on now.

I agree, for a paysite, etc, I would go for the best bw available myself, but we are a budget host, we charge about .13 per gig for dedicated servers, and no setup fee, and for that you get support and *acceptable* uptime. As far as I know, all of our clients are very happy with our service and the speed and reliability from cogent. You can actually get full speed from us on the 10mbit connections we sell.

                                                    Multihomed quality BW for less
