The Sun UK: Heroes and Liberators

    Heroes and liberators
    http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2003131405,00.html

TO anti-Americans, there is nothing but evil in the war against Saddam Hussein.

For the peace protesters who always seem to know best, the USA is the tyrant ? and vicious psychopath Saddam Hussein the victim.

They turn the world on its head by likening America to a gang of thieves trying to steal Iraqi oil.

The opposite of this conspiracy theory is the truth.

For the first time in history, a benign superpower is using its military might to stop a monster slaughtering his own people and putting world peace at risk.

We should not be comparing the world?s greatest democracy with a gang of bank robbers.

A better analogy for what is going on in the Gulf would be the tragic case of schoolgirl Victoria Climbie, who was tortured to death while the authorities stood by and did nothing.

For poor little Victoria, read the entire Iraqi people.

For the social workers who wrung their hands but took no concrete action, read the United Nations and Europe ? especially France.

When the history of this week?s momentous military offensive is written, America will come out ? not for the first time ? as the good guy.

Thanks to much- maligned George Bush, we are seeing the beginning of a new era in global politics.

America is a ?can do? society armed with the finest democratic system the world has ever seen.

Now it ?can do? something about international order and justice.

It has the wealth, the military capacity and now, under President Bush, the moral certainty to stop the rot.

What is happening in Iraq today will be a salutary lesson to those rogue states who thought the West had gone soft.

North Korea?s tin-pot tyrant Kim Jong-Il will certainly be thinking twice before testing US resolve with his nuclear programme.

Syria, Iran and Libya are already reassessing their roles as sponsors of terrorism.

And Saudi Arabia, false friend of the West, will begin reigning in the allies of al-Qa?ida leader Osama Bin Laden.

Importantly, Israel and the Palestinians are also ready to work towards peace.

Guardian readers do not like the use of American might ? even when it is right.

But they relish the free speech, prosperity and democracy that goes with it.

America may not get everything right all the time.

But its critics should try imagining how free, democratic and prosperous life would be today if Russia, not the USA, had won the Cold War.

    Ahhhh... The Sun.

    The height of English journalism!

I mean, as we all know... every fine newspaper has a topless page 3 girl... don't they?

That article doesn't surprise me considering The Sun appeals to and is largely purchased by the English equivalent of the hillbilly.

I said the English "equivalent" of the hillbilly. And you DO have them. I've seen them in Paris, speaking their heavily accented working cllass English VERY SLOWLY and condescendingly at a French person who, for some reason, just can't seem to understand them.

The only difference is they are called Harold and Lorraine instead of Cletus and Bobby-Jo.

And the Independent and The Guardian are? At least The Sun doesn't have any delusions about being a "serious" newspaper.

I've seen them as well. Actually I hear them more often than see them...I live in the center of Amsterdam, and they're the ones who keep me awake during the weekends, with their loud drunken babbling. Bloody yobs

...and then there's the under-employed, under-educated, aggressive English youth who think that a good weekend is flying to Amsterdam on EasyJet for 10 pounds, getting blind drunk, watching the football on a big screen in a pub in Amsterdam and then starting a pointless unprovoked fight with some poor tourist/Dutchman...

heh, yep....my gf is forever wanting to go to England, and I have absolutely no inclination. The only part of the UK I've ever seen is Heathrow's transit lounge

                      GOD BLESS AMSTERDAM!

England fucking kicks ass. London is hands down one of the greatest cities in the world!

                        A'dam is cool too, though.

Every pub is London is just another English pub. It's either the Rat and the Parrot or the Queen's Arms or some fucking thing... and I'm not into the overpriced nighclub scene so it's not really interesting to me...

However, every coffeeshop in Amsterdam has its own, very unique personality.

Amsterdam is a city with true individuality. It is truly the most amazing city in the world. Plus it has those fucking amazing French.. sorry Freedom Fries!

Hmmm...so bascially you compare London and A'dam on pubs and coffeeshops? Last time I checked, London had a lot more to offer than just pubs.

Yeah well I've seen all the museums and art in London. Once is enough. If I want art I'll go to Continental Europe..... all the REALLY good stuff is there. I've seen all the major attractions as well. Ultimately it comes down to what city you feel comfortable hanging out in. I prefer Amsterdam. London is too stuffy and class conscious for me. Amsterdam is free-wheeling and crazy... and there is far more diversity. Amsterdam attracts more freaks and non-conformists... and that's the vibe I like.

I prefer the art on the continent as well, especially in A'dam. But London is just a great city. One word: theatre.

Legitimate criteria on evaluating a city. Yes, ultimately it comes down to where you feel more comfortable hanging out in.
