He was, however, not smart enough to figure out that he was the bad guy, that everything he represented was anti-american, and that he was arrested at the end and was going to jail.

Actually you are incorrect.. he just ordered a hazing (Code Red) in the movie of someone who was subpar in performance in his position. The fucknuts who carried it out were the ones who screwed it up and killed him going overboard. The only reason he was indicted on anything was because of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice, that holds a commander responsible for his subordinates actions from his command. No where did they establish that he ordered them to kill them though. So feel free to be brainwashed by liberal movies some more

Actually you must not have much a clue about many military arms. In a lot of countries corporal (sp?) punishment in the military is fairly common.

The Col would have the authority to tell the Platoon leader (usually a Lt.) to "do what was necessary" to correct the problem with the soldier in question. The Lt. would then order the Squad leader (Cpl or above NCO) with either implicit instructions or leave it up to the NCO's discretion. The NCO would then carry out the order with other members of the squad.

Now no where did the Col tell them to beat or kill anyone, but if that is what happened he would still be responsible because of the intial order was vague. Though I doubt in any stretch he would be brought up on counts of murder.... the ones on that commited the murder would have been the ones to actually be fully accountable since it was thier actions that caused it and if they believed the actions would have killed the soldier it would have been thier duty to disobey.

We are talking about the US military and no they do not have the authority to do that. But why are you even arguing about this. The point is how can you justify going to a real war where real people are going to be killed by quoting a fictional criminal from a movie. Try to stay on the ball here people. Many people are going to die. Many mothers are going to lose their sons. Many children are going to lose their fathers or mothers. And we try to justify it with glib quotes from a movie.

You sound as if you haven't been in the military, I spent more then my share of time in the Army and I can tell you my command extended to about anything I wanted to take personal responsibility for espcially in areas that are still dangerous such as when I was in Korea. I can tell you for a fact we had people who wouldn't shower and they were dragged into the shower in the middle of the night out of thier bunks and scrubbed down with scrubbing brushes and if they resisted they sometime got roughed up. You have no clue what the real military is like so you should save your opinion on things you actually have a clue about.... not just what you believe should be right in the perfect world rolling around your head.

You were the one who started this debate over the quote and how he was a criminal in the movie... I was just showing that movies aren't real life and what does happen in the military would be quite different.
