watching this documentary on BBC2: seems the british are to be blaimed for a big part.
Britain promised the arabs, that they could have their own country in Palestine (occupied by the Turks at that time), if they would along their side against the German-Austrian-Turkish alliance in WO I. The arabs agread, but during the WO I, the jewish lobby put pressure on the brits to have their own country there and they agreed to this. So, britain sold the land two times!
