Its not about the oil. In 1989, the year of full scale Iraqi oil production, Iraqi oil revenues were $14.5 billion dollars. To account for inflation in the last 12 years lets be really generous and double that figure to $30 billion dollars.
In 2002, the US GDP was $10,586.3 billion dollars. Divide that by 365 days, and you see that the US GDP is about $29 billion/day.
In other words, all the oil in Iraq is only worth about 1 day of US production.
The first gulf war in 1991 cost the US about $60 billion dollars at the time. Double that for inflation again to $120 billion. $120 billion costs vs. $30 billion in oil revenues. In other words, the first war cost about 4 years of oil revenues.
