U.S. Tells Nationals to Leave Kuwait Immediately
KUWAIT (Reuters) - The U.S. embassy told American civilians in Kuwait on Monday to leave immediately for security reasons linked to what it called the threat of military action in Iraq (news - web sites).
"All U.S. citizens in Kuwait are urged to depart immediately," a U.S. embassy statement said. The British embassy also called on its citizens to leave.
The U.S. embassy said it was issuing the advice as "a result of an overall assessment of the security situation in the region due to the threat of military action in Iraq."
There are normally about 8,000 to 9,000 U.S. civilians in Kuwait, the main launch pad for any U.S.-led war against neighboring Iraq. The number is believed to have fallen to between 4,000 and 5,000 over the past few months amid U.S. and British preparations for war.
