Stupid question about a pretty model

Hey I am to have a shoot next week and I get this email from her,
Hey Tom,

I need a realy huge favor. I am stuck over here in Cali and I have not money to get me home. The company that I was working for has not found me any work and I am soooo tired of it. I can not find any way home. If you could help any at all You copuld take it out of my pay and That would also mean that I would be able to shoot with you right away this week. I can understand if you can not help but you are my last hope.Please do not get mad at me.

Ive shot her before, but should I go a head and buy her a plane ticket? it's only $251.00 *shrugs* what would you do?

If she wants to be partly paid in goods/services, go for it. Just make sure you pay her at least some cash (better for the release), mention "and..." as additional payment on her release, and that you don't buy the ticket until after the shoot, unless you *really* trust her.

Problem she is in LA i am in Virginia so couldnt shoot her till she gets back, Like I said I shot her before, I don't know her all that well and Not good at making these types of judgment calls so that is why i am asking hoping some content providers out here would give their feelings.

Sorry, I am slow. In that case, it's a really tough call... You don't want to lose the money, and frankly its hard to trust anyone.

You could try it as a gamble. Can you afford to lose $300, in order for a chance to get more content? You could always tell her you will do it, but because of the risk it would have to be an extra day of shooting... and ruin her if she doesn't do as promised. ("She never turned-up after I paid for her ticket to the shoot" would get most photographers' attention.)

Aaron and I have both had bad experiences with lending money to models in hard luck situations.

Here's one of my stories: I was all set up to do a g/g shoot in a nice hotel room. One of the girls is already there. The second girl shows up after phoning to say she'll be a half hour late (some models think nothing about wasting the time of 1, 2, 3 or more people by showing up late for shoots). When she shows up, she says, "I don't know if you can shoot me today, look at this." The other model and I watch her take off a wristband to reveal some gause. When the gause comes off, we see some deep cuts in her wrist. She says, "I got so pissed at my boyfriend this morning I put my hand through a window." These didn't look like the cuts you'd get by breaking a window, unless you rubbed your wrist over the jagged glass remaining in the frame. She offered to do the shoot with the wristband on and added that she needed to to pay her rent, but I felt that since the cuts were open, with the skin parted showing the flesh underneath, she needed to go to the ER for some stitches, so I told her I'd pay her for the shoot if she'd make it up soon. I gave her a large check for the shoot plus some cash for a taxi to the ER. Since then, she has been very difficult to reach, never having the time even for a brief conversation when I've reached her. Apparently, she's stopped modeling entirely. However, how has my kindness and generosity been rewarded? A year has gone by. Has she sent me a check for the shoot money I lent her? Has she proposed even a repayment plan of say $50/mo for 5 months? The answer is no. I will never see that money again.

Take that for what it's worth. I'm sure Aaron and I could tell you other stories of kindnesses unrewarded. The bottom line is, once the girl has the money, you are in the collections business and your chance of collecting is iffy at best.

Just my even though this is a moot point now...

I've done this sort of thing before, and would again. Its true that more often than not kindnesses are not repaid, but thats not the point.

My theory is to go through life going the extra mile to help people in any kind of need. Sure, sometimes you get taken advantage of, but there are lots more things than dollars and cents in the long run.

If I thought the model was being genuine I would take a chance. One time we had a model that showed up ill for a shoot, and we drove her home round trip (5+ hours) to another state. Months later when she had a chance to return the favor on something, she didn't.

But that is her loss, not mine. Helping people out of a jam is its own reward.

That is an elegantly perfect solution to hook her up with some work so you don't have to risk it.

Not an issue now I guess, but I've totally bought plane tickets and such for models in a jam before. Yes, I've had people be all like I worked for free when actually they traded for expensive airfare, but I've also had people who were totally cool and where I got to feel like the world is a better place for being able to do the nice thing.

Just because a girl models nude does not mean she is trying to hustle you or looking to streewalk. A nineteen-year-old might just not know who to contact in LA and it is expensive to stay here if you don't know anyone. Anyway, nice work thinking of setting her up with work to get home.
