EBAY SCAM EMAIL !!! Read If You're An Ebayer !!

Well people, I almost fucked myself with this email that I got

I know that my checking account information has been outta date on my Ebay account and I've been meaning to update it, but I wasn't selling anything, so I didn't bother to update it. After getting this email, I went over and figured that they did need it, but wondered about their 24 hour urgency that they stated in the email, that seemed odd.

Anyways, when I clicked on the link to update my infotmation. I went to the account page which looks like the normal Ebay page. Well, when I got to the credit card section, I started to enter it in until I saw that they wanted my PIN NUMBER, which set up the flag for me. I then looked at the domain and the domain is some foreign site http://www.ecotone-re.com I immediately closed it down of course.

Here's the link to get to the page that I was talking about, you'll probably have to cut and paste it because it's a long one

    http://www.ecotone-re.com/secure/eBayISAPI.dllSecurity=UsingSSL=0pUserId=ru=http3A2 F2Fcgi1.ebay.com2Faw-cgi2FeBayISAPI.dll3FMyEbayLogin26pass3D7B_pass7D26 userid3Dpp=

Did anyone else get an email like this ??? It scares the shit outta me how I almost fell for it. If it wasn't for them wanting a PIN number, I"m sure that I would've finished the registration, giving them my checking and credit card info.

I've been a webmaster for going on 7 years, I'm surely not a newbie in case that's what you were infering.

My father is retired and a big eBayer. He received that exact scam about a month ago and didn't fall for it, thank God. He sent me a copy and I filled it out with a bunch of bullshit and a big FUCK YOU at the end.

i recieved it too, which made me worry cuz i sold a laptop on ebay at the end fo ebays billing cycle.. so i did owe money at somepoint and i figured they tried to bill it and the CC was dead.. i heard about the scams though so i just went to ebay.com and fixed it.. deleted that scam mail and told other people that use ebay about it..

If you look at the reply-to field, chances are it's not @ebay.com, that should be enough of a warning sign.

The From field was, but the reply-to probably wasn't.

In sendmail (for example), it's easy to put anything you want in the "sent from" column. They do the same thing with the ICQ "update your password and verify your account details" spam. The only part that never fits, is the URL, it never ends up being of the sender.

One day I'm sure they will make it law for every big company to solicit such updates only through some security mechanism like SSL, with certificates and such.

When I clicked on Reply, I got this

So it DOES have an @ebay reply addy. They probably just figure that if people don't fill out the form, but instead reply to it with questions, that they're probably not gonna fool them..

Looks a like like the Paypal email scheme of last week asking for undated information as a security upgrade. The url was pointing at a site owned by folks in South Arfica.

That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard.
There's no proof that the hacker actually accessed the credit card numbers. And there has not been a single reported case of fraud related to the hacked credit card numbers.

If the hacker was smart enough to get in....he most likely has something - (just that they won't cause pandemonium and have to overload themselves with costs - issueing new cards, numbers, mailing them out, doubling their workload - if they don't know for sure what the financial implications of him having the numbers will mean to them - yet)
If he is a smart one and this was planned and not some kid who got in by fluke, I would assume he's brilliant enough not to put his newly acquired information to use right away.

I could be wrong but hey.......I'm always the devil's advocate
