Legal issues on owning a domain ....

I am able to buy a domain right now that isnt taken .... the .com version of this domain is just one of those lame search pages....

The .net .org or anything else isnt taken. This domain is the exact name of an rap artist. who has just released his first cd and is getting pretty huge

any kind of heat i would take owning the .net version of his name ? sence the .com is owned by one of those search bot things

People can challenge you over anything, its not whether they have a case or not, its who has the most money to bully or the one having the "staying" power....to stand ground.

It is your wallet, if its worth it to you keep it :-))

They can sue you if you are in the U.S., but they usually do not.

They could take the domain away pretty easily, but it's rare for anyone to go beyond that step.

They can claim to have trademarked it... then you'd be in violation of the domain squatting law.

                                I had the same problem/bonus.

I owned KISS the bands website for a while. Before they got in the internet game. And first i got threats of a lawsuit by sony signatures, but eventually they paid me big cash for it. They always hope you hand it over, as legal fee's are outrageous. Juts send them a letter back from your lawyer, and the next letter you get will be the CASH OFFER

If you're name's not the same, you can be accused of cybersquatting. Probably not worth sueing over (although they could try), but they can strongarm you into giving up the domain.
All they would need to do is say: that's my name, not his, and you're screwed. Falsifying the information doesn't help, because you would just risk yet another avenue of losing the domain.

The Act bars registration of a living individual?s legal name as a domain name, where the registrant has registered the domain name with the specific intent to profit from the name by selling it to the person or to a third party. Remedies are limited to injunctive relief, and damages are not available, although a court may award costs and attorneys? fees if appropriate.
