the drug laws are horrible and draconian, granted. They lead to a lot of unnecessary violence, I'll grant you that too, I'm with you all the way. In fact, take away the drug laws and most of the hostility against the police would vanish overnight.

however, there are plenty of people out there who we DO need to be protected from, I guarantee you that. If you ever go to a prison or a homeless shelter or spend time on the streets you'll realize that it's no fun living in a dog eat dog world, and there are a LOT of truly evil predatory people in this world, and it's the cop's job to keep them down.

Cops are the tools of the government. If you have a bad government passing bad laws the people will hate the cops. If the goverment is just and is passing just laws people will view the cops very differently. You can't blame them for doing the job they're paid to do. Unless they're assholes about it.

As a society there is absolutely no doubt we need police, but what gets me is their priorities are fucked up. In Denver it is the policy of the police force to not respond to certain property crimes (i.e. your car getting broken into) they tell you to come to the police station to file a report because they don't have the resources, even then they dont investigate shit.
Yet they have the resources to setup speed traps, prostitute sting operations, etc. Call the cops and tell them you smell pot coming from someones apartment and there will be 5 cop cars there within minutes. Unless it is something the city will profit from or a high profile case cops arent worth a shit.

No I'm not on the pill, and I don't think I have a weak kidney. I'm just squeamish when it comes to stuff like doctors and needles and pain. And all the other things I'm scared of are legitimate issues. I was scared of cops because I had bad experiences getting traffic tickets and being tailed, I'm scared of the freeways because I knew someone that got in an accident and died on the freeway! As for having a baby, I heard a horror story of someone having to have a casarean without anasthesia because the doctors didn't have enough time... And having a baby hurts a lot, I wish men had to endure it instead of us!

Those are all real legitimate things to be afraid of i think

luckily I'm not the one that has to live with discontent. The police aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and I'm perfectly okay with that.

There is no Utopia. The police are necessary because there are some pretty shitty people in the world. Are some of the cops themselves shitty? Sure. There's corruption everywhere. There are video store clerks who are corrupt too. Do you also hold an anti-video store clerk sentiment? Isn't he abusing his power of DVD rental sometimes?

If fucked up people didn't constantly invent new ways to do fucked up things, cops wouldn't be necessary. And neither would prisons, or the death penalty, or rape crisis centers, or women's shelters, or fucking AA, or traffic school, or any of that shit.

Problem is most laws are very vague... As we have seen in this thread -- cops can twist the truth, plant weapons, etc...

PLUS you got real subjective laws -- like weapon laws that allow the officer to consider any object threatening -- and laws that gives cops the right to harrass people minding their own business if the cop "feels the person is an immediate threat to the surrounding property or people in the area" -- which is more subjective bullshit...

Bottom line is cops can fuck with whoever they want, regardless of the "law"... If they don't like how you look or maybe they just have PMS -- you are fucked.

No, but once I got out of a "no proof of insurance" ticket. It was a highway patrol officer who pulled me over and I didn't have my insurance card in my car, it was at home. The officer told me the fine for proof of insurance was a lot , around 1k, so if I knew for sure that it was at my house, he would follow me in his car to my house so I can show him. My house was around 10-15 min away, and he followed me to my apartment. He even poked his head inside my messy place and asked me if I lived all by myself and I told him yes. Very true. I have a friend that met a girl in a bar a few years ago and they went out a few times. She told him she had a friend dying of cancer and wanted to know if he knew where to get some weed for him. My friend hadnt smoked pot for like 10 years but he told her he would ask around thinking that would be the end of it. She kept bugging the hell out of him for weeks telling him how much pain her 'dying friend' was in so he got some weed from someone he worked with and gave it to her (not sold, gave)just to shut her up. Turned out she was a cop and and as soon as he handed the weed to her he was surrounded by a dozen cops with guns pointed at him. They ended up taking his car, which he never got back, and is now a convicted felon, never been in trouble whatsoever his whole life. Nice system we have here.
