What do I tell this girl? Here's the lowdown.

We placed an ad for models. This girl calls and wants to do a shoot with her boyfriend. BUT. She won't even meet with us unless she knows how much she is going to make. Mind you, I have no idea what she looks like, so I can't give her a price or even guarantee she will be shot. With what little resources we have, we have to pick and choose right now.

How do I get this girl to come in for a test shoot?

Now now, I am I nice guy. The college kids are a tight community and I don't want to come off as an asshole. It will get around.

I just would rather be able to tell her something so she will come in and we can see her. I am all for getting the college kids money.

be honest with her and tell her that it varies.

plus, you can always say that she will not know what she is comfy with doing until she meets you, and that you will pay depending on how much you can shoot.

worst case, you can always book her for something and if she totally sucks you could do a half session and pay her less. fake an emergency, throw some $$ at her, and scoot her out.

unfortunately, sometimes one-timers looking for a quick buck can be hot.

I am so sure there is a way this will be worth it to her to meet me, it's just the convincing part.

ex. Anywhere between $100 -$400 hour depending on looks and what she does

Explain the complexities of the legal side of this business.

I never do test shoots. Total waste of time and I expect most hot models would refuse.

Instead, they email pics. No PC? Mail their pictures in.

Then I give the model the complete shoot description and contract price.

I tuck those pics in the folder, and when the model shows up, if she has misrepresented herself, I politely say that the pics and the face don't match and boot her out.

Only happened once.

yeah i have found models that are a hassle to get them to come and meet with us for a brief interview never work out....either they are a no show for their shoots or have to high of expectations. I'd stop waisting my time with her and find some one else.

Take my advice... Don't settle for the wrong models when you get started. She's asking too much. Let her know it, and if she can't come up with a solution, don't waste your time and money. If she can't send you some sample photos, and wants you to guarantee money, something is up.

I think it is totally reasonable for a girl to want to know your pay scale and expectations. She does not want to waste her time on a meeting any more than you want to waste yours. That said, of course, you can't ethically guarantee something that you are unsure of. Any reasonable person should understand that it is wrong to ask you to make a promise you might not be able to keep. I would give her general parameters of what you are thinking of, but never ever make promises until you have the information necessary to know you can keep your word. My , but I have to agree with EricR -- Seattle is sort of a unique place to shoot.

Well, you are correct.... there is nothing wrong with telling someone that your pay scale is between say $50 and $150 per hour depending on what is being shot. I would tell any model sight-unseen that she will have to meet with me first for me to know what exact pay rate she qualifies for, if she qualifies at all.

There has to be a process. Making too many exceptions for individuals just screws you up in the long run.

I totally agree that you need a process. I know I would personally not go to a job interview for any job which I had no idea about what it paid or entailed. I don't usually bother meeting with a model I have not seen a picture of unless he or she is a referral though. I've actually never had a model show up looking worse than the pix she submitted.
