Getting traffic doesn't always have to cost you money.
I have a company that does designing, etc.... at http://www.x-spider.com/services/ and i am also a gallery reviewer for sites like free2peek.com. Normally those services cost money but i'm always open for traffic deals. On some TGP's i do gallery reviewing for, they add a good link to a sponsor of mine or my TGP and some designs i make (banners, complete sites or gallery designs), i make for traffic and not $$.....
But there is no doubt that the only WELL converting traffic is from search engines. I can send you 100k uni that will get you ahh... let's say 5 signups but i can also send you 5k that will get you 5 signups... bestway i think is to invest some $$ and get it from search engines.
Anyway, just my two cents.
