I was getting irritated at this thread until bhutocracy came in with some sensible additions.
#1 best singer of all time is unquestionably Mike Patton. Don't believe me? Listen to some Lovage: Songs to Make Love to Your Old Lady By. Listen to some songs by Mr. Bungle from the California lp. Listen to Faith No More's Angel Dust. Listen to Dillinger Escape Plan's latest album. Mike Patton's range is phenomenal. He can sing any style, in any voice. He can croon and he can scream, and he can do it all in the same breath. I'd even argue there probably hasn't been a more talented singer in history.
#2 would be Jeff Buckley. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of his music, but the guy's voice was amazing.
Tom Yorke (not sure how it's spelled) is also an amazing singer.
On the other hand, I think Maynard James Keenan is overrated... though he has impressed me with his integrity. Who else with his fame would invite Mike Patton's most experimental bands (i.e. Fantomas) on tour?
Without reading every post to see if they've already been listed...(they likely have been)
In no particular order
Steven Tyler
Steve Perry
Stevie Nicks
Jim Morrison
Burton Cummings
Paul Rodgers
Lional Ritchie
Gary Cherone
Michael Stope
Chino Moreno
Axel Rose
Geoff Tate
James Heitfield
Bono
Anthony Kiedis
If you mean greatest lead singer in history based on vocal ability, I would have to say Carl Wilson from the Beach Boys. That guy could fucking sing.
I prefer to spell "Ozzy" S-A-B-B-A-T-H, his shit has gone downhill since Diary of a Madman, but Zakk Wylde keeps me listening. That guy is fucking insane on guitar and he's got cool voice (Listen to some Black Label Society)
Danzig used to sound good, seems the further he gets in his career the more he sounds like a fucking lounge singer.
Freddie Mercury had a wicked voice, I suspect getting ass pounded contributed to his range.
Frank Zappa had a pretty cool voice, so did most of the other guys that sang for him..
Gregg Allman
Bon Scott
David Gilmour
Phil Lynott
Tom Araya would be my choice for "best lead shouter"
And the list keeps going...

only reason I didn't mention him is that it was all of them that contributed to the vocal sound even if there was a primary lead vocalist. Also important in the vocalist is the the creation of the melodies that he's singing in the first place.. do you credit Brian or Carl with the beauty of "god only knows"???
John Lennon.... for a lad from Liverpool he had a very versatile voice. Very bluesy.
And I will always repect McCartney for his vocal performance in "Why don't we do it in the Road?", even though he's a publicity-seeking, drug free cocksmoker now.

Well, I like Rush, and I like Geddy Lee's bass playing, but as a singer he's up there with fingernails on a blackboard.

Peter Gabriel
Phil Collins
Bill Medley
Chris Farlowe (Mick Jagger's nominee for the best singer in England at one time)
I don't know his name offhand, but I remember during an Elvis tribute show, the group Wet, Wet, Wet's lead singer sang Elvis's "It's Now Or Never" so well he just knocked me on my ass. I mean, better than Elvis.

Jesus Christ! No one has mentioned David Bowie?!!!
Here is probably the coolest singer on Earth. He'll be cool till the day he dies.
