Well.. truefully, I had students back when I was teach compare that actual cord progressions from Mahlars 1st, 5th and 7th Symphones. All the main progressions in his Mahlars themes and choruses are identical to Elfmans major movie scores. We had both original scores side by side and some measures are the same.. note for note with identical instrumentation. Im not knocking him for doing it.. I mean its great stuff, but I would call him more of an arranger then a composer. Same with John Williams, but Williams is not nearly at talented as Elfman.
Don;t get me wrong... I like Elfman.. He rights powerful stuff and being a brass player I love it. However, if you like Elfman, go get a recording of Mahlar's 1st 5th and 7th Symphonies recorded by the Chicago Symphony with Fritz Riener Conducting. It's amazing!
