Pt.2: Key Elements to successful design AND successful businesses.

    Great post AMP!

We´re ultra swamped today but I would like to add a few thoughts to the topic.

Many people said that already, but I will agree with all of you marketing freaks! Planning before designing is CRUCIAL to success. I won´t go over the "Goal, Strategy and Tactics" stuff because AMP already gave some great insight to all of you about that.

    http://www.gofuckyourself.com/newrep...hreadid=204508

First hint: Read like a maniac. Get a clue! Kotler, Al Ries, Ansoff, Hooley, Tom Peters, Drucker and even the old Sun Tzu should be your best buddies. Doesn´t matter what you do in the business. You are in BUSINESS - and these guys are the jedi masters. If you don´t know what they are thinking and/or doing, you know nothing.

Second Hint: THINK LIKE THE SURFER. This is ultra underestimated. People don´t realize that you need to be good at role playing to get into the surfer´s mind.

Third hint: Don´t whore yourself You will end up getting overworked, underpaid and will never be able to spend enough to develop a good product to your clients/surfers.

Fourth hint: Long term Success includes some failures. Get over it. If you want to stay on the edge, you will miss the shot from time to time, so you need to be willing to redo something that didn´t work out. Innovation involves failures from time to time. Its OK to make mistakes. Making the same mistake twice is plain stupid though.

Fifth hint: Be paranoid or get eaten alive! You need to think about evolution all the time. You wanna be a winner? WORK WORK WORK - hard and smart. This is Intel´s philosophy. Someone else is always trying to get your spot, so you can´t stop running. Ever. Don´t get too comfortable. Never be too sure you are THE ONE. Its dangerous to be a comfortable leader- Be a business paranoid - its good for you!

    Thats it. Never stop THINKING.

    Take care and kind regards,

    Bruno Dickman

Well, some good points on your post Bruno... I have to agree with all your hints.

Sure read is one of the best solution ! How is it possible to try something in a bizness you don't know ? And more than that, it's a general life lesson. you need to learn again and again to continue growing.

Thinking like the surfer is of course the way to go. But remember that it's difficult to have the same reaction. Each surfer is different and our internet knowledge make us less naive. Maybe a good solution is to ask advices, comments from your entourage, or ask them to test for you.

don't think to be underpaid ( if you're your own boss ) is a bad thing. I have to admit that investments are a difficult way of thinking. I prefer spend money to make my biz growing, buying content, adding good scripts or paying someone to gain time etc etc than buying a new cellphone or a brend new tv if its not needed. Don't forget, give money to your investments and your investments will give you the money back with interests.

Of course, failures in the biz are always present. You have to react with intelligence and as you said "Its OK to make mistakes. Making the same mistake twice is plain stupid though."
I think mistakes and failures can help to go ahead and to grow.

And for your last point: WORK IS THE ONLY AND BEST SOLUTION

1time again, Good post Bruno !

Thats the real trick now aint it?

A Surfers mind is a terrible thing to estimate. But there are ways around this through yourself and your own mind.

                            Good thread.

One guy that would definitely shed a lot of knowledge on this is Mike Wylde. His sites have been consistent money makers for ARS. Another guy who would probably have a lot of useful info is Buck Naked of adult.com who's designs helped AP and other sister companies.

Design is subjective...I wish there was more science in it. Because one lucky hunch doesn't translate to a system.

Good point. Interesting how some designers get lucky and convert 1:200 with one design and now they think they are the porn version of David Hockney. Wildesytes is definitely the benchmark for design, but I doubt that Mike W would share his secrets. For such a great designer, he seems to have a small ego (at least from the online radio interviews I've heard him on). What a great person!

Isn't there a thread earlier about using more scientific methods in site and promo design? Makes more sense than relying on any person's lucky streak.
