Stephen is a true pro and I feel honored to be considered in the same league.

she's a softcore model, considering she's got implants you can find tons of models like her. There is a big drop off when you go from 'Playboy style' to 'pink'. If you're a good photographer you can do TFP with hot girls like Heather, they'll be calling you like Kman says, she shoots for you in return for prints.

Hicks is THE MAN. Cuz he gets this caliber of chick and they do spread for him.

I'm not sure how much Hicks shoots himself these days. When a photographer gets big enough, a name, they've usually got an assistant/protege who is shooting alot of their stuff.

Love your photos. Fantastic work.

Got a free minute to talk shop? I was curious what you use gear wise? Are you shooting digital or chrome? One thing about your photos I love is your lighting. So what are you using? Monolights or some form of continuous light like a KinoFlo setup?
In these great outside shots are you using reflectors or bouncing the light?

Also do you hire a makeup artist? Do you do lots of post production work on your photos? Color Correction, etc? I'd love to here specifics. Thanks man and keep up the killer work!

As far as gear goes I use everything, 35mm and medium format even large format sometimes but not that much anymore.

The photos shown in this thread were all shot with a Nikon F5 film camera. My lens of choice is a Nikon EDIF 300mm f2.8 but I also use an EDIF 80mm - 200mm f2.8 from time to time.

I do shoot digital alot these days but film is still better if you want really good colors and great flesh tones. I picked film for this shoot because of the quality of the girl, the quality of the location and the large amount of time we had available to shoot. We were on location in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to shoot these shots.

As far as lighting goes I used almost all available light for the photos you see posted here. Some white fill reflectors but I would rather use the natural fill from a near by wall or even the ground in front of the model. You have to learn to see light and see what it will do once it is on the film. The human eye does not see light in the same way film sees it. Training yourself to see and understand this difference is the key to photos like this, not the equipment I use.

When I pick a location to shoot I often will pick it because of the natural lighting around it rather than just because it has a great background or something the model can work with. Once you find good lighting then find somewhere to work your model. Most photographers do this backwards.

I do use studio lighting in the studio and sometimes outdoor but its usually pretty basic stuff. We have a large selection of Speedotron Blackline lights and powerpacks with tons of different softboxes and heads. I have used kinos, and I love them but more for video than for stills. Studio lighting is a whole thread unto itself.

Yes I almost always use a makeup artist/stylist. I have used the same girl for many years now. We work great together and she knows what I want and how I want it. Make-up is also key, to much or not enough and your fucked.

Hair is something most photographers don't pay enough attention to. They get shooting and forget about the girls hair. I always have my stylist beside me when we shoot so she can see what I see and jump into the shot to fix it.
Makes a huge difference, if you have the time.

As far as post production work goes these shots are pretty much the raw slides. Now the first photos that Persian Kitty posted had some work done to it but not really to the girl more just the background and a little blur around the girl to help her stand out. That photo was used on a website which is why we worked on it.
Heathers Hot Spot

Color correction is almost always needed and very important and a true art form within itself. Basic retouching is good and should be done but also make sure your shots use a little soft focus filter, this will help with less retouching. But I would stay away from major reconstruction in photoshop, it never looks that real.

I'm feeling very frustrated with shooting lately and I think its because I can't seem to get a handle on lighting.

Its great to see you still shooting film. I love shooting on film still, but it seems more and more are going digital.

I think another one of my problems is that I need a lense where I can crank open the aperture more. Lots of photos I like I notice are shot with a 2.8 lense.

When radiosity came out for 3D rendering -- that was a major breakthrough showing how the color of adjacent objects affect each other, but still 3D rending will always look crappy compared to film... an artists knowledge of things like simultaneous contrast, color modulations, color theory, composition, etc. will always come into play but sometimes all that knowledge can be an obstacle to production -- that's why it's best to train your eye in beauty -- surround yourself with beautiful women, beautiful art, and beautiful environments as often as possible... so the subconscious mind can soak it all in and take control of the masterpiece while your conscious mind enjoys the erection...

Stephen Hicks is good, but he is a control freak like most of the photographers. He has many others working under him taking *Hicks Style* pics. They stay until they can get enough experience, money, and courage to go out on their own.

Hicks use to say he would prefer taking nature shots, but they don't pay the bills. The models tend to look the same. With glamour photography, it's the locations and the backgrounds that end up making the pics work, not the silicone titted babes!

I used to work for Stephen and although he is a control freak - any good artist who is as successful as he is will be. When his name and reputation is at steak - that's just the way it is

Also, he only has 1 other shooter on his staff who comes close to shooting his own style and that is Scott Evans. Scott has been with Stephen for years - maybe 10-15. Both of them shoot for Stephens website as well as some of the top mens magazines. They have another shooter on staff but he is a youngster and only shoots "amateur" type girls for the Barely Legal type magazines.

In addition, I can tell you that yes....Stephen would prefer to shoot nature if it would pay the bills. When he was a younger man, shooting nakid girls was exactly where he wanted to be. But now that he is married with children - the lifestyle of a famous erotic photographer sleeping around is not what it used to be

All in all - I can say that the year that I spent working under him was one of the great educational experiences of my life and I wouldn't trade that experience for nothing. Here's a little behind the scenes pic that Stephen shot of me one day while I was assisting him

yeah i presumed that Hicks was not shooting all that much these days. It's like a reward when you have made it to the top, not much different than a lawyer who has a hotshot younger attorney doing alot of the work preparing a case.
I've heard the same thing about Denys DeFrancesco.

These glamour shoots, they look really time intensive, a whole day affair, expensive. Is it possible to make money shooting this centerfold type stuff without magazine sales?

Good question Mutt. As I was preparing to depart from Stephen Hicks, he was hard at work planning for his future in this business - which would include less and less magazine work and more internet work. The magazines were cutting his budgets by thousands for assignment work and were cutting way back on payments for work that he shot on spec. It is not uncommon for Stephen to dish out $3500+ for a day long photoshoot with one of these girls. This includes (but is not limited to) model fees, makeup/hair, location fees, location permit fees, assistants (Stephen usually works with 3 assistants while Scott Evans works with 2), food/snacks, film and processing (Stephen shoots film for all his magazine work but will shoot a set or two on his digital camera exclusively for his website) etc..etc..etc.

If you can figure out a way to drastically (correct spelling???)reduce your overhead and still churn out some good looking work, it's possible that you can still make a few bucks in the magazine industry. But from what I can tell - that whole industry is not what it used to be. I think Stephen made all of his money many years ago before the internet was what it is today -

And lastly, I have friends right now who are in that business and some have been waiting 6 months to a year to be paid for a spread that has already ran. These magazines do not pay quickly at all. If this is an industry that you plan to persue, you need to make sure you have plenty of available cash to live on while you wait up to a year to be paid and/or reimbursed for your hard work -
