A bladder infection, something nearly all women will experience at least once in life, can turn into a more serious kidney infection if not treated with antibiotics. Common symptoms for a bladder infection are:
A burning sensation while urinating
Increased frequency of urination
Nighttime urination that doesn't normally occur
Pain above the pubic bone or in the lower back
Bladder infections most commonly occur in sexually active women, although about 10 percent of women naturally have bacteria in their vaginas that makes them more susceptible to these infections. In sexual intercourse, bacteria are pushed up the urethra, a 2- to 3-centimeter-long tube that goes from the bladder to the outside of the body. Bladder infections are rare in men because bacteria cannot easily reach their bladders--men's urethras are six to eight inches long.
