5 star resturatns are not the place for kids, unless they are exceptionally well behaved children and are taught how to act by the parents. Pretty rare for the most part, However.....
The issues that I have with kids in a restruant is that most parents arent watching the kids, they have this idea that children that act badly are funny or cute. If you say anything to these children then the parents get their attitudes out......
I am sure there are parents out there (myself included) that DO watch the kids. When my step daughter got loud and nuts at even McDonalds as a kid, me or her mom would take her immediately out of the place and into the truck. This is out of respect to others space.
Who really wants to hear a 5 year old whine?????......I dont and I know most of you dont.
The issue here is that most parents as a whole need need to wake the fuck up to other peoples personal space and rules such as:
1. Dont bring your kids to dinner for a business meeting, you arent focusing on the business, your getting timmy fries or whatever.
2. Your kids arent cute or funny. You wouldnt think mine are either, hence my getting a babysitter and allowing us to have an ADULT meal.
3. If you cant afford a babysitter why are you eating at somewhere other than home anyway?
Think more of others and their needs than your own. We'd all be in a better place if that was a reality.Comment

Yes, I got pretty fucked up on Thursday night. The difference is that I still remember what went on, I did not damage anything, and I chose to stay sober once the show started.
The actions and negligence of one specific person at this show has prompted me to cut off all ties with this person from today forward. This is a person that I considered a friend until about 3 days ago. You know who you are so don't be surprised when I do not return your emails, phone calls, or instant messages.
Personally, I am down for starting an industry black list to keep these people away from the shows. Just do not allow them to register, it's that simple. The people who can not act responsibly can make a choice. Grow the fuck up or stay home. Your antics and bullshit are not wanted. Our industry has a bad enough reputation as is.
I would like to thank those of you who attend these events and know how to behave. The majority of the people have a clue but it's amazing how just a few people can fuck things up.

but i want to make it clear for all the lurkers reading this thread - - that i was the one that told Ian kids would be fine.
as it was a friendly get together. billboarded as such by aaron.
i expected us to be on decent behaviour since it is a nice restaraunt. and yeh, the conversation did turn to shop talk.
but had there been small children in the room (it was a private room) we all could have modified our vocabularly. Also, since the room and table was soo big, it was hard to hear conversations from anybody sitting more than 2 people away.
I still think it would have been fine to have wives/kids/girlfriends/etc there. I don't know how it is everywhere else but In seattle - people take their families - to even 5 star places. And the places are greatful to have the business.
some of the others just wanted industry people... that's cool ...I can roll with that too.
I hope you all bury this hatchet pretty soon... as it didn't seem like a big deal at the time to any of the parties....Comment

I don't think the issue is JUST whether or not kids are acceptable at a 5 star resteraunt, or at a private dinner of "ADULT" webmasters....but whether or not people want kids to be there at all.
Some people don't get real vacations and use these conventions big or small as a working vacation...and sometimes that means they get away from their own kids.
If I was one of those I would not want one of my few real nights out with the adults to be hampered by someone who couldn't do something so simple as to find a baby sitter.
This is not a swipe at you Ian...I don't have kids but my nieces have lived with me on and off for 10 years now and 99% of my time now is devoted to their health and happiness whether that is me working or fun time.

I think you got the wrong impression of the LA show, while I must admit that I'm lame now and don't get oblivously drunk I thought the show was very productive from a business standpoint. I thought the seminars were top-notch and very informative, I learned some things about the new Visa regs I didn't have a chance to brush up on yet. In addition I think the overall networking aspect of it was great, reminded me of the old Orlando shows were everyone just kinda hung out and chatted. Had great small dinners both nights with friends and attended both parties, was in bed both nights by 3 so looks like I mised out on the destruction but I can tell you this, if they woke my sober ass up to throw me outta the hotel I wouldn't have been a happy camper. Only ones I saw doing drugs were the celebs in Hollywood on Friday when I went out after the party does that count? Send someone to the next show in Feb to report back for you, was a great show in my opinion and sounds like it for everyone else save for the few idiots.Comment

coming to the convention I had wished we got a room at the double tree so we could have been more a part of events and after parties before Kayla told me about pot plants being uprooted and bottles being thrown from the top floors.
The first chance I had to meet lensman was right after someone tripped the firealarm and his first words were asking if I had done it.. fucking lovely. I left shortly after and there were police in the foyer.
I like a few drinks and whatnot but you've got to be able to maintain your dignity.Comment

Anyone justifying or excusing or 'trying to understand' webmasters that get loaded to the point where they are either an embarrassment, or worse, destructive - is off their rocker.
That it 'happens at all kinds of conventions, even non adult' is irrelevant. Our industry is under far more scrutiny than others, and this just gives them ammunition. I'm waiting for the day some news program brings a hidden cam to a convention and these fucktards find themselves on 60 minutes. Except it won't be about just the fucktards.
