CHICAGO (AP) - The nightclub where 21 people were killed and 57 injured in a stampede was operating in violation of a months-old court order meant to close it down, city authorities said Monday.

"The owner knows damn well that he is not to open that second floor facility," Fire Commissioner James Joyce said.

The nightclub had been cited for 11 building code violations and the city has been in court with the owners since last July, officials said. City officials said they plan to go to court as early as Tuesday to seek criminal contempt charges against the owners.

Joyce said fire department inspectors visited the first-floor restaurant, known as Epitome, in October, but did not visit the second-floor nightclub, known as E2, because they had no reason to suspect it was operating.

There were reports that as many as 500 people were crammed into the second-floor club when someone sprayed Mace or pepper spray to quell a fight about 2 a.m. Monday, touching off the stampede.

Witnesses described a frenzied scene: Some people were trying to climb through the ceiling while others were trampled in the frantic rush for an exit, their faces and bodies flattened against the glass front door.

Some people fainted on the club floor. Others were coughing and crying, gagging and blindly groping for any way out.

Police Commissioner Terry Hillard said investigators were trying to sort out conflicting stories about the source of the Mace or pepper spray and obtain videotape from inside the club. Witnesses said the spray may have come from the club's security guards trying to break up a fight between at least two women.

"Lives were tragically and senselessly lost, pinned down by a stampeding crowd," Hillard said.

"We will get to the bottom of this," he said. "Right now our investigation is at full tilt."

The reality of the situation is there are some things pregnant women shouldn't do for the health of their babies.
We would be expected to feel sorry for her if she miscarried becuase of it. Or if someone didn't give her their seat on the bus..
it's not about judging people, it's about recognising selfishness when motherhood has inherent sacrifices. And the fact that the lack of them points to so many of the problems in families today where parents don't accept the responsibilities that come with the job.

Reminds me of a couple I saw with their 6 month old baby at an all day rock festival.. fucking idiots. when the thing develops severe hearing loss or tinnitus at 5 they will wonder why.

The mace wasn't the only factor....

The major problem was that there was just one exit.. and you had to go down 40 steps to get to it...

The second floor had been shut down for fire code violations and shouldn't have even been open.

And as said earlier.. panic breads panic.. Most of the patrons probably didn't even know why they were tryin to get out..

FACTS !!
Club was in the 2300 Block of South Michigan Ave
The fight was between 2 women and why Mr T sized bouncers needed to spray them is anyones guess....
Only PART of the second floor, The VIP area was against the Chicago codes and couldn't be used because of structeral support not Fire Codes
The club was rented out to someone else that night.
The Pepper Spray was used by bouncers from the people that rented it for the night and NOT employees of the Club.
Only 1 of the 4 doors was used as they wouldn't let anyone use the other 3.
Club was owned by a lawyer and an Ex County Cop who was fired for manslaughter a few years back!
55 more were injured
Area is full of gangbangers and when the shit flys everyone scatters..
And last but not least when someone is Prego in Chicago they don't board themselves up at home..

You'll see about the second floor, the alderman or I should say Alderwomen in that ward had money in the place and the only area that was off limits now was the VIP part.....
It didn't come out in the news but you're right about the guns they found there!
Never did say how far the women was prego, so that does make a difference..

In the "lake lot" across LSD (lake shore drive for those not familiar) there were kids filling N20 balloons from 5 tanks as fast as they could be filled. An obviously mafioso type came back with the caddy and deposited the half barrel back into the car.

All the while those nitrous balloons were being filled at the rate of 2 per second.
