Stunning. Lots of things are beautiful but very few are stunning. You could always say stunningly beautiful.

Actually I think 'stunning' might be a little too over the top. If you're going to use 'stunning' you better have some finesse in the way you use it, or we will know you're just trying to over compliment. Beautiful is fine for a younger woman... 18~25 if my estimate... it has sort of a youthful/girlish feel to it. Also, with beautiful, you must also have some style in the way you say it or it may be to little a compliment.

I'd personally go with "incredible", with "amazing" being a runner-up.

Stunning is a low-use word, you can't call someone that on a regular basis. You might say someone looks stunning in a particular dress, or on a particular night, but not every day. Beautiful is a more useable word.

Doesn't matter which one he used, he would've been screwed either way. The one girl was probably just mad he gave the other girl a compliment and not which one ment more. She would had the same reaction if it was reversed "you only told me I was stunning"

For me the ultimate accolade (and one I've used about only a very small handful of girls) is "You're so beautiful you're almost painful to look at." And when I say it, I mean it. If you can say it with a medium dry martini, one olive, shake not stirred casually in your hand, and sound like James Bond...(and we all know which James Bond I mean)...go with stunning. It is a far more elegant word, but requires far more finesse. The fact is, most guys can't pull it off.

If you don't own your own tuxedo, or you do but you call it a "tux," by all means, stay away from stunning.

Otherwise better stick with beautiful so you don't look like an idiot.
