And Why you think Platinumbucks was down for like 12 hours on the 30th ?
get out of town!Comment

Thank you I was going to say the same thing.........No host can have 100% uptime. It's sad that their are some that claim 100% uptime, and even more pathetic is the webmasters that say their host is Never down ever,,,,Originally posted by Mystery Man

no host can have 100% uptime, but a REPUTABLE host has a 100% uptime guarentee - refunding large sums of money if they arn't up.Originally posted by GirlsFreePics

1 1/2 years with flying croc - less than 2 hours total downtime in that time period, and they refunded huge money when it happened - and they told me when it happened, They told me when it happend, I didn't have to tell them and i didn't have to ask for a refund, it came on the next bill.Last edited by SleazyDream; 02-01-2003, 10:00 AM.This dog, is dog, a dog, good dog, way dog, to dog, keep dog, an dog, idiot dog, busy dog, for dog, 20 dog, seconds dog!

If you look closely we run our IRC server on a separate NETBlock from our customer networkOriginally posted by notjoe
NO, but you do run an IRC server on EFNet and im sure you're network has been packetted off the face of the earth because of it.
and NO we HAVE NEVER been down because of any flood , maybe it's because we have network engineers who actually know how to configure routers
just in case you are wondering our network didn't have any outages in over a year
1. ISPrime has multiple providers and is running BGP4+
2. ISPrime has knowlegable staff that acutaly know what they are doing
nice try bud

What's your point? It's impossible to run an IRC server because they attract floods? Well, how should I explain this.... An IRC Server is a very impoprtant community service, and because of the attacks, a challenge to do right. And if it is such a terribile idea...Originally posted by notjoe
NO, but you do run an IRC server on EFNet and im sure your network has been packetted off the face of the earth because of it.
irc.isprime.com = isprime's irc server (efnet)
irc.choopa.net = choopa's irc server (efnet)
irc.desync.com = candid's irc server (efnet)
irc.sextracker.com = sextracker's irc server (sextracker's own network)
These are all very large, very reputable hosting companies that we all know. And, IRC servers get attacked wether they are members of prestigious networks like efnet, or small networks, just a fact of life. I'm sure if you ask sextracker or choopa, they've never had any outage to their paying customer as a result of hosting irc. candid has only recently started running theirs, and it isn't linked at the moment, but given some time they will link too.
I can't speak for all irc servers, but I know at ISPrime, they have their IRC server set up on a different network, with the idea being that if the irc server gets flooded to hell, it doesn't take paying customers with it. Does this mean that you can't flood off ISPrime, Choopa, Candid, Sextracker, etc? No, you could flood off anything with sufficient motiviation and clue. Look at last weekend's mssql worm, 404 bytes were enough to take 20% of the internet down. It just means that they recognize IRC as a valuable service to the public, and are willing to donate the resources to create a separate network for it.
irc.isprime.com has address 206.84.2.2
irc.choopa.net has address 216.32.207.207
206.84.2.0/24 is annoucned seaprately, from a different router than what announces isprime's paid customers.
216.32.207.0/24 is announced separately, from a different router from what announces chooopa's paid customers.
Attack the irc server, and if the attack is sufficient, you will take it down, nothing else.Comment

And another note.
If your protection from getting DoSed is to just say "we won't have an irc server", that is a genious idea.
Sure, if you don't have a lightning rod in your back yard, your back yard wont get struck by lightning often, that's obvious.
But the question is, the 1 time you do get struck, will you be prepared for it?
I don't know the folks at candid or sextracker, but I do know the folks at isprime and choopa, and they both have thought of this problem before linking, and invested signifigant $ to do it right.
Hell, if it's done right, in the end you end up with a 'harder' service, as the experience with dealing with attacks on something other than your stuff will help you if you ever get attacked.
I can also tell you that DoSes are not terribly uncommon even if you don't host IRC.Comment
