    Will women ever be equal?

Do you think women will ever achieve 'equal status' in society?

It almost seems like an impossibility. They'll always be subjected to different standards than men. For one, we'll always want to see them naked, so they will always have there clothes off trying to make a buck that way.

The sexes are just hardwired differently. Is it a fluke that women have always been below men in every society from the dawn of mankind until now?

Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way. I certainly encourage equal treatment for both sexes. How do we create an equal society when there areobvious differences in male and female thinking patters and physical build?

At the same time, women are crucial. They raise helpless boys into becoming men.

How do we make a society 'equal' to both sexes? How will we know if we've achieved it?

UH, No the DON'T!! They raise them into mama's boys. One of my friends was raised by his mom, and I swear he has got to be the biggest pussy I have ever met.

And their relations ship is border line incest.

Equal doesn't necessarily mean "the same".

So what standards do we use to judge what's equal for women and men?

Should a woman be able to play hockey in the NHL?

Isn't that an exception? Most guys don't develop that type of relationship with mom.

I'm just curious which is why I started the thread. I don't want it to become a 'sexist' thread

Without getting biblical, is this really what you believe - that women should not or will not be equal?:

I should do more reading. I'm familiar with some of the literature regarind matriarchy. What I learned is that there really isn't such a thing. Upon close inspection researchers found that men in what used to be considered 'matriarchal' societies are still the ones in control.

I don't know anything about Venus or Joan of Arc, but I'm not interested in highlights or exceptions in history.

True. I can safely assume that most guys will not turn out like my pussified friend. He is the only person I know that was raised by his momma, so he was my only comparison.

As for the rest of your question, about being equal... I have no idea. I would like to think so, but I'm not smart enough to base a logical answer.

I know how things have been since man has walked the earth, and based on our history... you do the math.

But then again we're comparing apples to oranges.

In many ways women are better than men.

Are some women already more ______ than man?
                                                Successful, yes
                                                Smarter, yes
                                                Stronger willed, yes
                                                More dangerous, yes
                                                More powerful, yes
                                                More manipulative, yes
                                                Greedier, yes
I don't know about success, but I have read a lot about many single mothers in poverty.

Women are generally more proficient with language, but men are moreso in the maths and sciences. This could be due to socialization, but still. There are actual differences in brain chemistry.

I'm wondering if women being manipulative is an adaptive quality. They have to be able to get the rich guy in the sac to skimp all his money. Or is it a natural tendency?

Are they more greedy or do they realize that as an attractive woman there odds of success may be better to hook up with Joe Millionaire than to go study hard.

That's a good question. Never thought of it like that.

I wouldn't call marrying the prettiest girl success, but maybe a measure of success??? Damn that's a hard one. It's like one of the pieces of the puzzle required for success.

If I was rich, I'd have to have the prettiest girl, bought or sold. But it would be the combination of money, the girl, and the way I feel, that determines success. I wouldn't feel great having a lot of money without somebody whose company I enjoy, to share it with. That person would have to be a foxy looking woman.

Don't quote me, I don't know how to answer this one just yet.

Hard one, I agree.. but if a guy thinks he must have the prettiest girl, bought or sold, isn't that just showing off? Like having the biggest house, the fanciest cars, etc. Money can't buy us happiness as they say. Sharing it with someone you like, love - now it's another story.

Have you ever seen the sculpture of the Venus of Willendorf (Stone Age) and other divine ancient women worshipped by men? Have you heard of the amazones? It is not a legend.

Like having the biggest house, the fanciest cars, etc. Money can't buy us happiness as they say. Sharing it with someone you like, love - now it's another story.

Happiness comes with security, ability to obtain material possessions, having somebody who cares for you, and to be able to alleviate your families financial burdens.

So, for women, maybe it does/can mean success?

Here is Mother Goddess, the Venus of Willendorf

And she does appear to be fat, obesely so, rather than pregnant; a condition, it has been suggested, due to eating large quantities of fat and marrow, and a sedentary life.

Whatever it was she was eating that caused her to become so fat, the suggestion that she must have led a life of relative leisure in order to gain so much weight offers a clue to her status. The question is: Is this what women in the Stone Age looked like?

If what the archaeologists tell us is true, that Stone Age societies survived through hunting and gathering, Ms. Willendorf's obesity would have greatly impaired her ability to move around hunting and gathering.

The chances are, a Stone Age woman, much like the women in hunter-gatherer tribes today, would not have had the opportunity to get that fat, unless, of course, she had some special status. She evidently did not need to gather, or hunt, but must have been catered to and had her needs met by others.

Significantly, none of the few Palaeolithic male figures in sculpture or in engraved images is shown corpulent. If the woman of Willendorf was a special female, who might she have been?

The life-like treatment of both the overall form of a fat woman and such details as the figure's knees and the dimples where the upper arm meets the chest, has caused at least one writer to suggest that the sculptor must have had a real woman before his eyes.

If this were in fact the case, that the "Venus" of Willendorf is not an idol or a goddess but an actual woman, then she was clearly a woman
whose specialness is indicated by her obesity and also by the fact that someone, a man or a woman, went to great pains to produce a likeness of
her. But the likeness, if such it is, s noticed only in the torso and perhaps in her hairstyle; otherwise she has no face, unnaturally thin arms, and no feet.

The fact that numerous examples of this type of female figure, all generally exhibiting the same essential characteristics - large stomachs and breasts, featureless faces, missing feet - have been found over a broad geographical area ranging from Western France to estern Russia, suggests that some system of shared understanding and perception of a particular type of woman existed during the Palaeolithic.

Images of women, mostly figurines of the same type as the "Venus" of Willendorf, all dating to the Palaeolithic period, far outnumber images of men. This has lead to speculation about the place of women in Stone Age society.

Some have argued that these female figures denote the existence during this period of a prominent female deity identified usually as the Earth Mother or the Mother Goddess. On the basis of this assumption, it has been suggested that, unlike today, women played a considerably more important, if not dominant, role in Palaeolithic society; that possibly a matriarchy existed and women ruled.

Most of the Palaeolithic figurines are associated, through excavations, with houses and homebases.

The "Venus" of Willendorf may be a representation at once of the Mother Goddess and a special living woman..

Elsewhere in her work she says that if matriarchy were a viable political concept (one that helps a society survive) there would be one, but there isn't one anywhere.

I've heard people suggest that there are matriarchies in Island cultures, it's because the men delegated adminstration to the women so they'd have time to go fishing.

Ultimately, power is based on the application of force, and women are not suited to that either physically or psychologically.
First of all, Paglia is an idiot. For instance, her argument against being sexist comes down to "I have eaten a lot of pussy, so I'm not sexist". I would hardly consider her an authority.

Secondly, the last thing you said basically says it all - in premodern societies, power was indeed based on pure physical force. When physical force is most important, men are bound to be the ones in power.
However, these days physical force has become rather unimportant. Intelligence and communicational skills now play a much larger part in acquiring power than physical force. As for physical force itself, that has changed much with the development of modern weaponry. Physical force is now based on technology, rather than muscle.

Ofcourse, one should note the difference between "equal" and "the same". While men and women may be or may become equal, they most certainly are not the same. So, the concept of equal needs to be defined more accurately.
Are women only equal to men if they develop exactly the same behaviour? That seems unlikely - altering yourself to fit another stereotype hardly is a way of showing power. Instead, acknowledgement of the differences with appreciation for the different aspects of both genders appears to be a far more realistic and fair definition of equality.
So, the modern feminist should not be fighting for the eradication of all differences of men and women, but rather for acknowledgement of the value of feminine qualities for society. The dichotomy between the genders is not a problem, the problem lies therein that one side is still considered as intrinsically less valuable than the other.

One looks up and sees a funeral procession starting across the bridge. He stands up, takes off his cap, and bows his head. The procession crosses the bridge and the man puts on his cap, picks up his rod and reel, and continues fishing. The other guy says, "That was touching. I didn't know you had it in you." The first guy responds, "Well, I guess it was the thing to do - after all, I was married to her for 40 years."

counseling. They had been at each other's throat for some time and felt that this was their last straw. When they arrived at the counselor's office, the counselor jumped right in and opened the floor for discussion. "What seems to be the problem?" Immediately, the husband held his long face down without anything to say. On the other hand, the wife began talking 90 miles an hour describing all the wrongs within their marriage. After 5 - - 10 - - 15 minutes of listening to the wife, the counselor went over to her, picked her up by her shoulders, kissed her passionately for several minutes, and sat her back down. Afterwards, the wife sat there speechless. He looked over at the husband who was staring in disbelief at what had happened. The counselor spoke to the husband, "Your wife NEEDS that at least twice a week!" The husband scratched his head and replied, "I can have her here every Tuesdays and Thursdays."
