          not quite.

if you operate a paysite, any paying members affected by this are going to be hugely pissed. as far as new signups go, instead of my usual Y signups/hour, i'm getting Y*0.5. most advertising costs remain the same as well (regardless of internet uptime).

          sucks all around.

true but whats the point in stressing over things we can't possibly change. if you have pissed off members add on a couple extra days to their memberships, sure extra days for free costs you but in the long run it will pay off...blah blah blah

Well I sure noticed the massive speed difference, most of the sites weren't accessable or bloody slow if they were.

My sites bandwidth seems exactly the same as normal so maybe not to big a deal for business.

                            It's not just uunet.

You have to keep in mind the collectors for that neato little graph can very easily skew the results.

The effects seem to vary widely. While we've only seen ~2mbit/sec traffic at most from the worm (we filtered it on the border routers immediately), others are seeing much, much, more. ISP's that have any microsoft customers at all were very badly hit both from incoming attempts, and the 50-90mbit/sec the infected servers were pushing outbound.

I've seen level3 circuits down, uunet, cogent, etc. It just depends on the location and traffic distribution of their customers. All unix bigass hosting shops like isprime were not effected a ton compared to others because they don't have much (any) windows stuff, and were able to block immediately without it burning up their routers. I'd hate to be a big dedicated provider right now that provides unmanaged microsoft servers.. Colleges (umich is maxing out their oc12 right now, 600mbit up about 400mbit from normal traffic), cable companies, and just end-user/office ISP's are getting nailed and thus your traffic is dropping.

For us, we were fine at our ingress points. The problems we had were with our upstreams way up the line (he.net seemed to get really bad in san jose for a while, so we routed all traffic over our other stuff during the meantime), which are a lot harder to control. Other ISP's that control a lot more end-user type stuff were seeing 100% more traffic (i.e. a provider went from 300mbit to over 650mbit within an hour and stayed there), so since most big ISP's tend to have a fairly even distribution of both content providers and eyeballs, many hosting shops that buy from them were badly effected. I know one of our upstreams had to down about 3 provider circuits and fall back to the remaining two just because the others were sucking so bad.

In short, everyone is effected. Some more than others due to just the nature of traffic distribution and your location in relation to it, and also stupid script kiddie code that wasn't done quite right.

                            I'm off to bed.

thanks for the information, very useful! Well, either way, the internet is crapping down right now, I hope they have this problem fixed in the hours, would be great. I am not 100% on the idea of what they can do, or will do - probably going to take alot of work.

Are you saying that this isn't as widespread as it could be if there were more MS servers than FreeBSD or other UNIX servers?

I'm now taking bets on when this will clear up. Place your bets on:

                                  Next hour
                                  2 to 4 hours
                                  4 to 8 hours
                                  8 to 12 hours
                                  12 to 16 hours
                                  16 to 20 hours
                                  20 to 24 hours

I am betting $20.00 on 2 to 4. The bets will be distributed evenly across the winners!

This should be somewhat similiar to code red, etc.

So basically the major backbones will have things cleared up pretty quick, probably mostly allready done.

But the residual will be around a while, with effects probably felt until monday when the bulk of ISP's start shutting folk down that are spewing, etc.

                                      Who knows though.

And yes, if there were as many MS-SQL servers publically visible on the net as mysql or whatnot, it would have been far worse. ;)

Well, either way, the internet is crapping down right now, I hope they have this problem fixed in the hours, would be great. I am not 100% on the idea of what they can do, or will do - probably going to take alot of work.

Are you saying that this isn't as widespread as it could be if there were more MS servers than FreeBSD or other UNIX servers?

I'm now taking bets on when this will clear up. Place your bets on:

                                            Next hour
                                            2 to 4 hours
                                            4 to 8 hours
                                            8 to 12 hours
                                            12 to 16 hours
                                            16 to 20 hours
                                            20 to 24 hours

I am betting $20.00 on 2 to 4. The bets will be distributed evenly across the winners!
                                            I'm a pessimist.. I'm betting on 24+ hours...

So another Microsoft exploit. The question is why is Microsoft hiring more salespeople to sell their easily hacked stuff when it should be banned from the net as a health hazard?
