"One in three people in Greater Vancouver is Asian"

Wow...This will probably blow the mind of people who have never been to Vancouver....

    ********************

VANCOUVER - Statistics Canada's latest data detailing this country's ethnic make-up shows that one in three people in Greater Vancouver is Asian.

'Vancouver has the highest proportion of people born outside the country' ? Jennifer Chard
Jennifer Chard, a senior analyst for the agency, also says one in four Vancouverites was born outside Canada.

"In fact, Vancouver has the highest proportion of people born outside the country than either Los Angeles or New York, which I think would surprise many people living in Vancouver."

David Baxter, the executive director of the Urban Futures Institute, says the wave of entrepreneurs from Hong Kong and Taiwan has died down, and the new numbers reflect a different trend.

"A large number of people in China have skills, " he says . "They're coming to Canada as workers rather than as entrepreneurs."

Baxter says another immigration trend that is changing B.C's ethnic makeup is the fact more Koreans are moving to this province.

"Korea is number five in terms of source of immigrants. That's only over the last three years, so it doesn't show up much, but it's a really significant shift when you start taking a look at composition stream of the very recent immigrants, " says Baxter.

The figures from the 2001 Census also show the Fraser Valley community of Abbotsford now has the highest proportion of South Asians of any city in the country.

Statistics Canada also says the proportion of foreign-born individuals across the country is at its highest level in 70 years.

The report also says that people who identified themselves as Chinese surpassed the one-million mark for the first time in this country.

The top three countries of origin in 2001 were the United Kingdom with 141,370 immigrants, China with 107,450 immigrants and India with 92,430 immigrants.

If the Koreans moving to Vancouver follow the same trend/mentality as the Koreans here in LA, it would be good for Vancouver's economy. Most come to establish their own small business. It's a source of shame in some Korean circles to work for someone else.

The reverse is true for Filipinos. Hard workers but less entrepeneurial than Koreans. Focus mostly on nursing and other service jobs. Efficient, hard workers at mid to low mid pay.

Many of the Chinese that moved or invested overseas are beginning to funnel money back to Hong Kong now that the Chinese have shown their ability not to crush Hong Kong's economic system. Besides, at a consistent 4% GDP growth rate, China is looking to be a good investment.

I met a girl who was at Tiannemen Square. You tell her what a great investment at 4% GDP is.

Hmmmm. Human rights. Doesn't seem to bother American corporations that pump over $1B in direct foreign investments in China year after year. And that's just "registered" investments--who knows how many billions "unregistered" or "laundered" money makes it to China.

Although I share your concern for human rights, I believe that human rights will only come once China's economy develops to the point that it becomes another Singapore. Although far from a model of democracy, Singapore has learned that the best way to make money from people is to educate them and turn them into middle class consumers. Better for the economy and better for human rights.

It takes time. In the mean time, China cranks out 4% minimum returns year after year. Why do you think almost all manufacturing [low to mid level] are moving to China?

I love going to Vancouver for the West Coast Webmaster show but I hate shopping for clothes there. I am 6'3" and the clothes there are all made for petite 5'2" asian dudes. I thought the Pacific NorthWest was supposed to be the land of big lubmerjack dudes? I need to find out where the lumberjack dudes in Vancouver buy their clothes.. probably order them online from Texas.

I'm with you on that. I have to get tailor made suits up here, seems that they don't make bigger than 48 jackets, unless I go to a big and tall store. That's a joke, to get a 19 and 1/2 neck shirt, the sleeves are down to my ankles.

Hmmm, my wife is Filipina. She was born here and she is a nurse. Her family immigrated in the late 60's. You are correct about the Immigration Code's liberalism re nursing visas. Its definitely easier to get in the US via a nursing visa as opposed to a regular immigrant/family petition visa. But this doesn't invalidate my point that when it comes to occupations, Filipinos, as a group tend to work for others regardless of whether they are nurses or other professionals in comparison with other Asians like Koreans. That is not a put down, just an empirical observation both on anecdotes based here in Los Angeles and also

As for my line of business, I run paysites and do gallery stuff as well. I also have non-adult offline businesses.

Noting that certain demographics tend to work for others while others choose to go into business for themselves does not make them any inferior or superior than other groups.

                                                Fair enough answer.

I may not agree with it, but it is your observation, not mine.

Yeah, you can't walk downtown without seeing an asian with bleached or colored hair.

I heard on News1130 that actually Asians are the majority in Richmond.

                                                            Pretty interesting.

Isn't the city supposed to double in population over the next 30 years from what I read. I wonder where the next wave of immigrants will be coming from or if the current patterns will continue?
