    Favorite Port?

Anyone else enjoy port wine? If so, post your favorite label/year.

The other day I was typing in my birth date on a site for registration and I put 1073. Almost didn't catch it.

I buy mostly 1/2 bottles from the '70, '77, '83 and '85 vintages. Usually Grahams, Taylor Fladgate or Fonseca.

Nice thing about port is that its relatively inexpensive compared to dry reds. You can still get bottles from the great vintages of the '70's for under $100. You can go back to '63, one of the best port vintages of the century, for around $150-$250 or so.

Compared with 1st growth bordeaux and grand cru burgundy from the best vintages of the 60's and 70's, its a steal.

I'm partial to the tawny ports by Delaforce. Even the cheap stuff is pretty good although stuff from the mid 70's is my favorite. Its also damn hard to find pictures of port bottles.

I don't do much port now, but if I did I would probably go with the '77s; the '83s have always been a bit harsh. Quinto Noval was always nice. I also prefer the 20 year old Tawneys, usually a much better buy than the Vinatge stuff

A good Sherry is nice, now and then, esp. the Lustau' Almacenista's. http://www.emilio-lustau.com/

I didn't think there were too many cork dorks at GFY
