So what am I suppsed to do about this? Just ignore it and hope everything goes away? They have falsely accused me of patent infringement and i'm not sure what i'm suppsed to do about this.

Extortion (Black's Law Dictionary - 6th Edition) is defined as:
"The obtaining of property from another induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, violence, or fear, or under color of official right."
"official right" is your key there.<a href="http://www.adultplatinum.com/"><img src="http://www.adult.com/wmbanners/10dcash-468x60.gif"></a>Comment

Basically they're trying to charge you for something that doesn't exist.
Think of how many other people received the same letter that you did who DON'T know what ACACIA is or how to find out more information about them. They're basically sending mass SPAM MAIL to everyone on their "bought" lists demanding money.
The African guys from Nigeria come to mind...PHAT SERVERS - Quality dedicated hosting at a quality price!

They are saying you infringed a patent and owe them money and have to pay them or face serious problems, sounds like if they are sending this to hundreds of people that dont even use video................... but im not a lawyer.Originally posted by Hooper

i just talked to someone at acacia on the phone. she said that as long as you link to any site with streaming media on it - trades, sponsors, etc - that you are causing the patent to be infringed upon.
they contacted me because a site i trade with links to galleries with movies on them.
in their view, you are violating their patent if you link to a sponsor with streaming media unless you license from them.Comment

LMAO! They are screwing themselves SO BADLY! A few people that get these packets that don't actually use video themselves are going to let it go to court, and the judges are going to throw the cases out or rule against ACACIA and they are going to lose tons of money in court costs.Originally posted by basschick

If they send me a subpoena I will appear in court and tell the judge straight up, this company is a blood sucking pack of wolves and I have done nothing to infringe on their patents.
I would love to see the proof they have.. I bet they throw out a bunch of sites that aren't even mine

That is REALLY fucking pushing the envelope. That's like saying that you're guilty of something for knowing someone who's committed a crime.. Total and complete bullshit.Originally posted by basschick

They're shooting themselves in the foot is what they're doing. They're so desperate to push their quarterly reports up that they're just trying to hook as many people as they can to recoup their losses... It's going to work against them in the end.Originally posted by tootie

That's what my understanding of it would be..
Actually, anyone remember what net radio show had the Acacia lawyer on? It's archived and I remember the lawyer explaining double-dipping, and that they wouldn't ever go after sites that link to the content such as TGPs, MGPs, etc.
Anyone remember?
