Why do sites still use warning pages?

Why do people still use them even though they are worthless from a legal standpoint?

That's one theory. I think it's a little more likely that people use them because link lists, adult directories and DMOZ all require them. Not to mention their spider-trapping goodness.

                2 reasons:

1- If a site is ever brought into court, they can illustrate that they made no effort to trick the surfer into viewing the porn, in fact they put up a page to help the surfer avoid seeing anything naughty that they didn't want to see. Nothing's going to free a pornographer from liability in a country ran by Jesus, but little things like that can make a difference.

2- a warning page is a good lead into an FPA, which is a good lead in to a sale.

You need a good warning page, an overpaid lawyer who keeps you paranoid and a zip code database if you want to really succeed in this business.

I about being paranoid, all you to do is get arrested once. Its was funny my lawyer was talking to me about having copies of the pics and websites in another place , that way if the federal gov ever came in and took it all you still operate. I told him the day(it would have to be a real slow day compared to most sites out there ,we are wholesome lol ) the federal gov knocks on my door is the day I am retired from the adult web business lol.

While it's not a legally binding agreement, it does show a good faith effort to keep people from seeing your porn site by mistake.

If they have to choose between prosecuting you with your warning page or someone with full on hardcore right at the root of the domain, they'll take the easier case and go after the guy with no warning page.

It's an easy, simple, act of good faith and it may make a difference someday.

Since, very soon we won't be able to use any kind of pop up windows, using warning pages allow you to force the user to view and ad before accessing your main page...Plus, I think it helps as far as search engines are concerned.

i remember for a while sites were linking disney.com and the like from their warning pages for under 18 users.

this resulted in people typing a search for disney and coming up with a bunch of porn sites. perhaps it was a campaign launched by walt himself???!?@#!???

you guys are crazy to believe warning pages are there for legal reasons, this is 2003 right? no one visits porn sites unless they look for porn

the purpose of warning pages is to have them listed as Free Sites, most link lists require it anyways and just like SpaceAce says its good spider food

To put huge ads on them. Whenever I make freesites for link lists i try to get rid of the surfer before he even enters my site and wastes my bandwidth looking at pics. I send more of my surfers to sponsor from the warning than any other page. Just put a nice big ad on top, another ad after the warning scroll box, the enter link, and then another ad on the bottom, lol.

As people have said, there are plenty of reasons to have a warning page. First, you show good faith, and maybe even scare away a couple of kids. Second, you get into more link places, some of which require them. Third, you can save on bandwidth, by not dropping people right into a more bw intensive tour page or whatever. Fourth, it also means you can have a way to skip the page with a lot of your outgoing links, if people want a clean tour. Seems like a pretty reasonable practice to me.

                                                Three simple letters:
                                                CYA

(For the folk in Rio-Linda, that's an acronym [abbreviation made up of the first letter in each word of the abbreviated phrase] for COVER YOUR ASS.)

I was wondering how the fuck people clicked through that warning page.
Somone else said that yesterday... that's a netscape thing. People still use netscape, lol. Anyway, I'm having trouble changing the colors... What do you recommend?

1- If a site is ever brought into court, they can illustrate that they made no effort to trick the surfer into viewing the porn, in fact they put up a page to help the surfer avoid seeing anything naughty that they didn't want to see. Nothing's going to free a pornographer from liability in a country ran by Jesus, but little things like that can make a difference.

2- a warning page is a good lead into an FPA, which is a good lead in to a sale.
I agree, but if 15 year old will see this note it is make them more curious what is behind.

                                                          ?

Just stick a font tag right around the text.

                                                          (a href="main.html")(font color="#000000")ENTER(/font)(/a)

Change the parentheses to the greater than and less than symbols as needed.

Even legally, it MIGHT help a bit in terms of perception. After all, this is an area where opinion counts a lot. Also, you need to put up a ยง2257 Custodian of Records notice anyway, so you might as well do a warning at the same time.

Did he HAVE one?! Of course not. So he has alot more work to do to retain his SE traffic.
