Is it true if you go Mac you never go back?

I am considering moving to a Macintosh. Unix stability, easy interface, no more Bill Gates in my life.

    Anyone using a Mac?
    What do you think?

I am thinking of buying one for video editing.

Plus, they look cool. Other then that, I never used one before.

Are they really that stable, and that much faster then a similarily priced PC? We have some Win 2K boxes that are pretty stable and never crash. But, good 'ol microsoft...we have this one Win2k box that is a piece of shit, locks up, freezes, blue screens.....

I know a guy that really wanted to use a MAC as he is a graphic designer and he was told that MAC computers were better and never crash etc...He used it for a few months then dropped it as he was pissed is was always crashing and was not compatible with most softwares he needed to use...he threw a few thousands away for that ...

We use all Macs in house but honestly it doesn't really matter. People who get all religious about operating systems are just stupid victims of viral marketing. 99% of the stuff is the same. Macs crash just as often as PCs- don't let anyone tell you otherwise. A good Mac person can setup his Mac so it almost never crashes- but so can a good Windows or Linux person. Macs can't use all the software that PCs can- but I've never found a program I wanted to use but couldn't. Russian Submitter had a Windows app, it ran fine on my Mac in emulation whenever I needed it. The fact that a lot of stuff is not available for the Mac is a plus in my book- in five years of using Macs I have never gotten a single virus. In fact no antivirus software I have ever used has found a virus on one of my Macs. You know all those frantic emails PC users send to each other when there's a new Outlook virus? Those viruses don't work on Macs- don't even have to worry about it. All this spy ware and crap that gets into your registry- none of it is Mac compatible. Not even an issue. No last minute rush for virus updates and security patches. There are very few security holes and what ones there are aren't worth the effort of most hackers. Hackers go after "low hanging fruit" i.e. why go after 5% of surfers who MIGHT have an opening when you can go after the other 95%? So security and a reasonable assurance that my computers are safe is a big plus.

But honestly I'm not a Mac advocate, they do a lot of really stupid annoying things. They just do different stupid annoying things then Windows machines do. All computers basically suck, they just suck in different ways. I'm more used to and able to handle the way Macs screw up so I use them most of the time.

I like MAC. I was thinking about getting one but all of my software is PC and I do not want to have to buy it all over again. That is the only reason I have not purchased one yet....

I have three Macs and 2 PCs. The only time I ever make use of my PCs is really for my gallery submissions. No one has come out with a submitter for Mac, and I don't like running Virtual PC (though it's a pret program and can come in handy).

We just got out first Dual Processor G4, and it's a dream. If you do go Mac, you probably won't go back.

                              PS...

                              3 Mac....4 years...2 crashes (on the same box...OS9)

Someone who knows what they're doing might be able to set up their PC so that it doesn't crash often. But any idiot can plug in their Mac and they're not going to have issue.

One of our designers uses a Mac with OS9 I think, it crashes much more than any of the Windows machines around here.

I find the mac a lot more stable unless you run a lot of cracked software and place patches into the Extensions folder. The Mac seems a lot more sensative to cracked software then a PC.

I use a Mac for music and a PC for day to day work and I know from experience that the Mac is more stable (clock timing etc). OS X also has Midi encoded in the kernal which is a plus.

Macs suck, plain and simple, for too many reasons to count.

Bought one a few years ago --- will never do so again.

People buy them because they look pretty and their advertising is very effective ...

Although their latest advertising is completely misleading .. to say the least.

Macs are the biggest hassle to use ... no matter how you slice it. Unreliable ... crashes all the time. The company is always out to screw their customers. The list goes on and on.

I think my mac crashes quite a bit less than my pc. One thing for sure. In the six years of running a mac I have NEVER had to re-install the OS. Where with the pc....

We have been using Macs for about 6 years, and each OS release seems to be getting better. We just went to OS 10.2. and only run 1 app in the OS 9 which is QB pro. Some apps are not there yet on running as smooth as they did in 9. Photoshop and Golive are 2 that are a tad slower. We also have PC's and use them more for the surfing and window related conversioning that is required to do the graphic and web stuff.

Each his own. Both platforms have been running freeze free and quick.
I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.

Are you serious? The only issue I have with Apple is that they can't compete pricewise. But...once you get past that, you know that you've gotten what you paid for. A much better machine.

I buy them because they're far superior machines, but that's just my opinion. If you've never really spent much time using one and are considering buying one...get to an Apple Store or CompUSA and play around for a bit.

Macs are not a hassle, they don't crash and Apple support is 10xs the support I get from Dell. But then again...with a Mac, you won't need much support. I just had some questions regarding their webservices.

                                              Spend you some brain.

I use to work at a multi-media place when I was in college part time and they would only use Macs. I loved them, never crashed, great for video and picture editing. Just good machines, then when I started in the porn, I took what they gave me...I miss my Mac

                                                  I switched....

                                                  from Mac to PC.

I've had 3 macs in the last 12 years. The last 2 have had numerous problems, crashing daily etc. My Mac friends couldn't fix them.

Maybe OS X is better. I hope so, for Apple's sake.

Nah. Bought a G3 when PC's weren't yet compatible with music studios. Back then, Mac's were supposed to be the "music" computer too ... just like graphics.

Damn thing still crashes/freezes all the time. Big controversy about the G4 upgrades ... since Apple didn't make it available to G3 customers. You had to buy the entire machine all over again ... which wasn't working well to begin with --- complete ripoff.

Wrote them a letter ... no response. Typical.

Mac users always have operational problems viewing websites --- like not being able to view basic wmv files. It's not just my experience --- this was discussed at length at the Amateur Roundtable at Internext.

Many webmasters were stumped on how to deal with Mac users having problems viewing basic files.

                                                      Because Macs suck ... period.

I have a new g4 osX sitting right next to the machine I am on now. I never even turn it on, its a damn shame. Its interesting to play around on.

                                                        Reasons I dont like it.

A huge lack of shareware and warez for it.
The fucking mouse at full speed is sub-par. I HATE the mouse speed. I want to flick my wrist an inch and have the mouse on the other side of the screen. Not have to make 5 broad sweeping motions to get the fucker across the screen. Evidently I am not the only one cause I found a site for a hack to speed it up, but it makes it herky jerky, which is even worse.

Thanks for the input. As a person that sold against Apple for years this is a swallow my ego decsion. Here are the observations I have made that are influencing my decsion.

                                                            1. OS10.2 is built on free BSD so there is no comparison to any pre OSX Mac operating system. I like Unix it is rock solid. I am on my third Dell Inspiron and I like Dell, I like the hardware but I am tired of blue screens and viruses.

                                                            2. The new PowerBook http://www.apple.com/powerbook/index17.html
has a great looking screen and fast processor.

                                                            3. I can eliminate so many prophylactics like zone alarm, outlook express virus and attachment scanning.

                                                            4. I use only licensed software so cracks are a non issue.

                                                            5. I hate Microsoft spyware. All future software from those kind folks sends them more information about me than I wish to provide.

I might hate myself in the morning but I think I will take the plunge.

...interesting, we have a mixture in the studio - I personally have always used a mac as my main machine - especially for video and retouching etc... The mouse thing may be true, but I've used a wacom for so long I don't really notice.

Also I have never had a problem getting software, including so called 0 day warez etc... - in fact that side of things tends to be alot more friendly than the PC version as far as I can tell. All software I use is pretty much bought now anyway.

However you definitely need a PC, you need to test shit, as well as some encoding things with video eg. wmv etc...

...the new 17inch laptops though, look pretty unbeatable in my mind.

I use a Mac for music and a PC for day to day work and I know from experience that the Mac is more stable (clock timing etc). OS X also has Midi encoded in the kernal which is a plus.
