you don't need a detector, you need a scrambler, especially with laser being used. Since laser is point and shoot, by the time the detector tells you it is on, it is too late.
Scramblers on the other hand trash their signal so they never know how fast you are going.
It should be pointed out that most cops in their testimony will say something along the lines of, "I observed the defendant traveling at a high rate of speed that I estimated to be (insert # here) MPH. This was verified by my radar/laser unit."
The point being, the cops observations will take precedence over that of a machine. Same as if a DUI breath machine doesn't show you to be legally over the limit, but the cop saw you swerving down the street.
