Getting framed for child porn! Advice, please!

Some idiot is spamming aol mailboxes with boy kiddie porn. On Christmas week!

Problem is that they're using a return email address of one of my domains! Yikes!

I found out about it because of bounced emails if an AOL mailbox doesn't exist. Somebody may be trying to frame me, or it could be randmom, and this is some serious stuff.

Any webmaster can get victimised by this! Because of the seriousness of child porn, this is very bad thing to get framed on. Advice, anybody?

Contact AOL's abuse box. Relax, sendmail keeps proper
logs, if it's not you running the bulkmailer ...you're SAFE!

There's some header info on the bounced email, so that'll help.

There's understandably going to be upset recipients and the first thing they'll react to is the return email address.

Is the domain in question important? If it's not a significant revenue generator you might want to put up a notice on your front page that you aren not sending the spam mail and do not condone spam or kiddie porn. Write up a short explaination about mail headers so that people can see where the mail is actually coming from. You should definitely contact the upstream provider of person sending the spam and explain the problem. You might also want to contact the FBI (or equivalent) just to make sure they don't come knocking on your door.

It's a standard spammer tactic called "Joe-Jobbing".. They do it to people they don't like, but often it's just random. As part of their ethical business plans, they choose addresses from their mailing lists to be the "from" and "reply-to" addresses.

After all, spam hurts nobody right? Just hit delete?

Unfortunately, I can't just disable the domain as I'm doing business with it. I've sent an email to AOL abuse box and got an automated reply back. I let my webhost know. I filled out a report at the FBI website.

OK, I received an email from the first upset spammed victim. He threatened to call the police on me in that email. I sent him an explanatory note. At least now, I have a canned reply the next time somebody complains.

BTW, thanks for the tip about another webmaster getting tagged with the same problem over the last 24 hours. I found that thread and got some tips there, too.

The spammer is apparently working from A-Z and he's in J right now. I can tell because of the bounced emails. I really need to get him closed down.

What other law authorities do I need to contact? I filled out the FBI form, although I don't know how judicious they are with these online inputs.

I also notified ASACP and all they advised is to get counsel.

Yip happened 2 me once. had my ISP turn off that email account. Got tired of around 3 k of bounced emails per day.

This happened to me a while back. One of the things I did was go to the CP site, see who the credit card processor is, and send them an ultra nasty letter that I am turning over to the FBI, and the legal department, not only the CP site but the credit card processor as con-conspirator for the felony they inflicted on me.

Don't know if it helped, but it made me feel better.

If you've got full headers from any of the emails sent, consider posting them in usenet ( news.admin.net-abuse.email ). Just title the post "Joe-jobbed - child porn" and put a brief explanation and the headers in the body. Those guys can tell you what happened, if there's any history, if the ISPs involved give a shit, *possibly* the name of the person doing it to you, etc.

Warning: There are LOTS of militant wackos in the group but they do know their shit, and also some people with some degree of clout hanging out there (i.e. head abuse people from Verio/Cogent/etc.) that might be able to do something.

i think they have bots that scour the boards for email as well.

use spamcop.net to analyize headers and such

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

Thanks for the tip about news.admin.net-abuse.email. I got great analysis on the breakdown of the header.

The perpetrator is in Russia and the server is somewhere offshore. But the nameserver is in the US (Washington).

It was suggested that in addition to trying to put the perps out of business, I may be able to file a lawsuit for libel. Interesting and useful feedback.

You make it sound like all spammers have to joe job people in order to make a buck. That's totally untrue and you know it....only the lowest of the low would joe job people and then use it to spam CP. Sure spam is annoying, but for most part spammers don't do joe job attacks except the total scumbags. Also joe jobbing is popular because of anti spammers like yourself who will see to it that the person being joe jobbed is quickly blacklisted on spews, spamhause, and the like.

I'm still blacklisted by spamhause even though I contacted them and told them what happened. SPEWS upgraded my blacklist status from level 1 to level 2 which means "possible joe job attack" but they never removed me completely. Fucking morons, I hate anti spammers more than the spammers after I got joe jobbed. I always thought they were on my side, but they're just idiotic millitant fanatics with a lot of bottled up rage.

I myself was joe jobbed a few months ago so here's my advice:

1. Except law enforement to swing by your office. THIS WILL HAPPEN, I can assure you of that. It happened to me.

Don't worry, they won't arrest you....just tell them what happened.

They were very nice to me and realized that it wasn't me doing it since I posted up warnings everywhere.

2. On the email address and domain being joe job, state on the web site that you're getting spam attacked and if possible setup an auto reply on that email account.

3. Contact the FBI. It will take a while for them to respond, but they will eventually. It took the FBI about a month to have an agent contact me, and by then the threat was over however it's good to have them be aware of it.

4. Wait. Unfortunately there's really nothing you can do but wait for it to be over. Eventually whoever is doing this to you will run out of steam.

A level 2 SPEWS listing is essentially no listing - which I'm sure you know but others may not. And while I agree with you the anti-spammers are often borderline fanatical, I'm sure you can understand some skepticism on their part when it comes to adult internet programs. While your program may not allow spamming, many others might have a TOS clause banning the practice that is rarely enforced - or they actually spam themselves then claim it was an affiliate who did it and state they cut the fictional webmaster loose.

From the anti-spammer community's view, all they see is non-stop porn spam, hosts keeping it going, CC processors along for the ride as they soak up their standard points, and affiliate programs allowing it under the table or flat-out flaunting it (cough, cough)

The problem you're having is the result of the adult internet as a whole, yet again, failing to police themselves in any manner - and it'll cost the industry at some point. Nothings gonna bring government intervention in quicker than Betty Smith in Little Rock/Winnipeg/wherever screaming at her congressman cause little Johnny got some porn spam in his email.

My hypothesis is that the spammer that joe-jobbed you is one of your spam sending contractors that you ripped off.

Sure, all spammers are TOTALLY honest, that's why their subject lines are stuff like

"Hey, where ya been?" from Joe
etc, etc..

Anyone who defends spammers either IS a spammer, or makes money from spam. When are you going to realize that and STFU for your own good, little spam boy?
