Lost the cat, got a dog

well, here is the story.
My cat ran away, his been gone for 4 days.

I decided they aren't loyal pets so I went and get me a shitzu pup today.

Now I've never had a dog before.
He is very very small. 8 weeks old.

How many times / day should I take him to a walk?

How do I train him for the pissing / shitting situation?

What do people do on rainy days?

Responces are greatly appraciated.

Buy a dog training book & plenty of newspaper along with an unbrella & raincoat....

What breed of dog did you get? Each breed is different in their needs...

You should take him out every couple of hours and not give him too much water. Only give him water right before you take him out.

Get a crate for him. Dogs naturally want to keep their crate clean and won't shit in it unless they really have to.

I lost my cat today and I've been a wreck Unfortunately there are coyotes around the new neighborhood I just moved into so it's looking pretty bleak.

My parents have a shitzu and I couldn't be paid enough to have one. If you don't get them clipped regularly, they always have shit on their butts that you have to wash up. They are unpredictably snappy and the yap constantly.

There's no pet like a cat. They're independant but much easier maintenace.

I miss "Sugar" My daughters gonna freak when I break this to her.

I've had a cat for about 12 years. Recently I had to give her away, but good news I'm getting her back tomorrow! (trying to keep a long story short here).

Cats are the perfect pet. Unless you like that whole doopy, slobbery, 'yes master' dog thing... oh wait... I forgot where I was for a sec...

I have two Dobies and a Shepard,
I house broke em by using dog crates. Keep them in the crate for most of the time for the first 5 months.
I would let them out of the crate directly out side and tell them to "go potty", once they went, I would let them in to play around the house for 30 to 45 mimutes, them I would put them back in their crates. after an hour i would let them back out and repeat.

I feed them once a day, they always have a freash bowl of water.
I have a big fenced in backyard that they play in, so I don't walk them for exercise just for fun.

Different breeds of dogs have different personalities. My best advice is for you is to acquire some books and educate yourself about Shitzu's. Having a pet is almost as big a responibility as having a child. The first thing to do is to take him/her to a Vet and have the Vet check him/her out for any potential health problems.

Crate training is the way to go. I picked up a Rottie pup a week ago and he howled the first couple nights, so we kept the crate in the living room so we could sleep a little.

He now sleeps through the night and doesn't cry in his cage so we moved him into our bedroom with the crate. Dogs like to "be with the pack"

All puppies are different so there is no telling how long he will cry in the crate or howl at night, but DON'T give up! It will stop the howling.

Don't let him spend too much time in the crate at once. 2-3 hours at a stretch unless he is sleeping through the night, leave him there at night.

Feed it 3 small meals a day with the last meal at least 4-5 hours before you plan to go to bed yourself. This way he can eat and eliminate all he needs to before bedtime.

Generally pups need to go out right after they eat and/or drink and then about 20 minutes later, after playing and immediately upon waking up. And then every hour or so in between all that if you want to get him housetrained faster. Every single time he eliminates in the house, it sets back the housetraining!

Search for the breed online, you will find all the info you need

You might consider contacting the kennel-club in your area. They might be able to recommend a local breeder/expert who could answer your questions.

sometimes cats come back up to two or three weeks after they 'disappear'.

Crate training is maybe not cruel, but it's not nice. It's akin to keeping a small child on a leash. How would you like to be kept in a small crate all day? imho if you're gonna have a dog you gotta be ready to deal with the inconveniences they bring as well, nothing is for free

Welcome to the world of small yappy dogs : )

Get a blanket and rub yourself on the blanket so it'll smell like you and put the blanket over the crate, so at least he feels like youre with him a little more and he's not as afraid.

put some toys or stuffed animals inthere with him.

Crate training is a must! Our dog loves his cage. As soon as you yell at him for anything, he runs off into the cage... its his little safe spot.

I've never had a shitzu, but we have a miniature pinscher, they are known as the king of the toy breeds. They are extremely smart, short-haired and clean, very very protective. Big dog, small package. They love to eat raw vegetables and play fetch.

I'm watching my dog roll around on his back with a tennis ball next to him right now, like a complete clown trying to get my attention

Oh yeah, and if its a male dog I advise you to neuter him at 6 months of age and they will never lift their leg to pee on anything. In addition they never develop breeding urges and don't hump things. Their personality stays more like a puppy and they are just better pets.

My kittie Sookie. She ran away a few times, which was really hard on us. Talk about stress and imagining all these horrible things happening to her. Luckily where we live now it's impossible for her to leave the appartment unless we let her out.

NEVER NEVER NEVER take him out of the cage when he is crying, barking, etc. The best way to let him know that making a fuss will NOT get him out of the crate is to put it in the same room as you. Wherever you will be spending a few hours without being to busy to deal with him.

Let him bark, cry etc and IGNORE him completely. Don't look at, don't talk to him etc. Once he quiets down for about 30 seconds or so, open the cage and say good boy and pet him like a maniac lol. (unless he fell asleep and that's why he's quiet)

It's going to be a hard few days but it should get better each day. Good luck

Crate training is NOT cruel as long as you use it right and not leave him in there more than a few hours at a time and when he's out play with him alot.

set half of the crate with newspapers and stuff so he can shit/piss on it..other half for sleeping..hopefully if your dog is decently smart he wont shit where he sleeps

yeah, that works. when i'm too lazy to go out at 7am with my 90lbs Dobbie-girl i take her in a bed. she sleeps then up to 1pm :D

to post starter:

1. find ur local shitzu club, go there. join it. talk with ppl. they'll help

2. buy all books u can find about shitzu only. no other breeds.

3. go & buy Royal-Canin ARG36, it's da best. be sure to give the right ammount of it and a plenty of watter.

4. bring ur pet to a vet, make sure to make all injections.

5. don't let him out before making injections TWICE. that usually happens @ three months. if u let him out - he can die fron some illness.

6. play only using some toy, NO HANDS. yep, u have shitzu, not Dobber, like me, but still: NO HANDS.

7. love him NOT TOO MUCH - don't spoil him. he'll love u anyway

Did u check in all the trees nearby..

Several times that mine 'ran away' .. except they didn't, they were stuck way up in some tree for days

or someones roof.. or locked-in a shed somewhere..

or some jerk threw a firecracker at it, and it'll be back during the next days
