Open a large storage facility...ya know the ones with like 100 small storage spaces that charge about $100 a month each and require no maintenance. Easy money.
Real Estate - and have a property management company look after it for you. They'll take their money from the rent, keep up on the maintenance, and send you a check for the difference. No worries on your part and a very safe investment.

you've been had..
munies don't pay anywhere near those returns,

Right now.. I assume these funds are not in any one bank account and stuck in one country? If so, break it up and *very* carefully spread it around the globe. It needs "securing" - don't trust banks, lawyers or "financial advisors", but listen to em.
It is a fair lump of cash, but it can still "dribble away" pretty quick - that's experience talkin!
I like that bit on no taxes! Tis amazing the compounding effect of the interest on a scenario where you pay no taxes - love it!
Even nicer when you can sit on your ass and collect the interest and have this "legal" Beats having to manage/monitor some business investment you have got stuck in...
wait 'till interest rates creep up again...
keep your eyes on munies,
they are NOT fail proof
Can you suggest anything else that I can avoid taxes with (aside from offshore)? I am not into this to make money, I just dont want to lose money or pay taxes. Ive got six figures (which is a big deal to me) tied up in these things. I know you got experience in these matters.

Now that's not bad advice. (How ya been, Tanco?) IF you can be arsed to build the thing and you know a good security firm you can trust....
6 months ago I would have said buy property in London or Cyprus. Now I don't know... Buy some gold maybe and dump it in 3-6 months. Short term, I think either that or oil.
Make a bit of effort and do something like the above, or take a bit more of a risk and invest in a new business. I do have a coupla ideas at the moment, and will be talking to VCs soon.
Either way, good luck. 5% on a few million is a god enough income if you ask me.

I was just about to recommend this as well. These storage facilities basically run themselves; hell you can keep an eye on them from your computer at home. The market for self storage properties is more fragmented in Canada then in the U.S. so you can make some good returns from buying these up here; it's a bit more competitive down south. You'll always have customers who need storage space. Also with trend of baby boomers downsizing their homes there should be some healthy and steady growth in this industry over the next couple of decades.

Labret....
1) don't be affraid to pay taxes...the best time of my life financially was when I was paying over a mil a month in taxes
;-))
2) I don't wanna give you any specific recomendations,
because I know the future as well as the next guy,
and wouldn't like to take personal responcibility with YOUR money and MY mistakes with your money
3) but...I can tell you things NOT to do:
A) don't keep all your eggs in one basket
B) DO diversify
if you wanna talk MORE investments and "causes and effects",

if you don't mind following the 2nd richest man in the world - invest in insurance.
=)
- - - in response to storage lockers. that was a knee jerk recommendation. they aren't a cash machine. and there are high risks associated with them - especially launching one in a recession - when people are thinking of ways to cut/skrimp and save.
storage facilities - have high costs of land and take 2 years to get past vacancy rates to were it is making any money. At that point, they are great. They usually sit 90-95% in use - at least in seattle -
Get a few mutual funds. Something with a low expense ratio and decent return.
Put some in some bond funds for income now, and some in stock funds for growth (otherwise your stockpile will lose value to inflation over the course of time).
Don't pick anything risky. Pick some large index funds or something.
Simple, safe, effective, low maintenance.

Hey.. you could set up an offshore corporation/offshore trust, put all your money in a Swiss money market account at about 8% per year or so, and not have to pay taxes on the gains.. I know a REALLY good company that's based in Canada that will do this for you.. it's like an $18k start up cost, but after that it's really good. Very professional, and very worry fee.. And you can't beat Swiss banks; very discreet, safe, etc. This company deals primarily with high net worth/high income/complicated financial situations (E.g. Sports Athletes, etc). But porn is a business where their servicies are beneficial, as well.. If interested, I'll give you the URL.. just email [email protected] .. I just don't want to post it here for everyone..
in canada segrated funds properly diversified amoung at least 6-7 management companies (pick 4-5 funds per company) with different investing principles speading assets across high and low rish investmets got my old clients little to no negative returns in this current financial climate. When it was good they made 20% a year.
They complained others made 30% when it was good, but they arn't complaining now casue the others lost more than they made and my clients, although getting no real gains in the last 2 years, didn't really loose any of their gain either.
Seg funds in canada also have a capital guarentee and credator protection againt being sued.

this is 120000 - 200000 bucks a year. Guess 40 - 50% taxes so we speaking 60000 - 100000 bucks a year. If you have no big expenses and live resonable you can easily rest on it for the rest of your life.
No risk at all. Noone handles your money but the bank and noone can steal your money. Bonds might be another option.
If you need more you will have to go with more risk.
My advice is simple. Don't invest in something that sounds to good to be true. Only greed can fuck with your future when you have that much cash.
in this case i would look into bonds that aren't taxed like muni's. after tax you could clear more per year.

Quiet, I think you are looking in the 'wrong direction' so to speak when deciding what to do with your cash.
Most monkeys will tell you to invest in what they've seen as traditional investments, but I suggest you invest in what you love. Snowboarding you say? There's tons of young upcoming stars in the Snowboarding world that want to start their own board companies. Those are actually relatively safe investments because you are investing in a hard goods (snowboard) company driven by star power/credibility. This type of gig would allow you to travel the world and board on the best slopes at the best resorts and be treated like a superstar while doing it.
There's tons of other related businesses that you can get into for under $1 mil that will allow you to do this. Go to http://www.transworldsnowboarding.com/snow/ and look around. Think about it from the standpoint I'm speaking of. Money + Talent + (product) = fun business!
I'm sure there's plenty of things you could do on the education and writing sides that would grow your money exponentially as well. You have to look past what you see when doing what you enjoy to see what drives the business of it. That way you make money while doing what you enjoy.
It seems to me that everyone that's made real money made it from doing what they truly love, not just making a mindless investment.
If you ever wanna kick around some ideas hit me up on ICQ.
I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...
i don't think whats been brought up so far is a 'mindless' investment. he wants to concentrate on things like school and relaxing. running a company could suck up his time, especially getting one started. just another thing on his mind.
maybe after he's done kicking back, then doing something like you pornwolf suggested would be a pretty solid idea.
Doing what you truly love is not work. Actually, as a man, doing what you truly love - even when it is a business - is the best retirement you can have. If anyone cannot understand this... they just haven't done what their hearts desire.
I did not mean to offend anyone by calling the other forms of investment mentioned previously 'mindless.' Canned maybe, but definitely not mindless. All are very worthy methods of cash growth.

yes but if he just wants to relax for a couple years and not worry about making money, then starting a business even if its in an area you enjoy, may not be the thing to do.
going to university and enjoying yourself while running a business would be tough.
I did dude. Seeding companies and running companies are two different things. In the example I gave before all he would have to do is well... just travel when he wants and board away, and take an update meeting to see how things are going while he's there. That's much better than having to collect rent, worry about maintenance etc. Watch stocks? Naah, watch the X-Games and see how well his company is doing!
I thought travel and snowboarding were things he enjoys? Again, and I don't blame you for this FI but people look at things the wrong way. Investing in a business doesn't always take much more time than investing in real estate. The key is finding the right people. Once a course is set, monthly or quarterly updates with several phone calls in between is all that's necassary.
Bro, I see it done all the time in the music and film biz. There's guys in the parties all the time that have nothing to do with the business outside of startup capital... but that doesn't stop them from fucking the choicest groupies back at the mansion! Not to mention the invites to the premieres, Hef's mansion parties etc. All from 'small' investments.

I agree 100%. Depending where you buy, Real Estate is one of the safest investments.
I live in San Francisco and the entire Bay Area is one of the most expensive places to live in the US. Average home price is $500,00.00 for a 3 bedroom. And I mean the ENTIRE Bay Area accounts for this number... SF to San Jose and the East Bay included. Real estate value has consistantly gone up for over 20+ years here. You can pretty much guarantee that anything you buy here will go up in value so it's a safe investment and you make money.
My family and I just bought a nice apartment building here in SF that cost 6 figures. We've owned it for less than a year and it's all ready risen at least 10% in value (we got a great deal).
So my advice is to buy a nice apartment complex in a GREAT area such as SF and and have a property management company run it for you. You'll make money on rent AND money when you sell it later :-)
Not to mention as the property goes up in value you can take a loan out from the equity and buy more property. Eventually doing this over and over again can make huge PILES of money. When you're 60 you could easily own like 50 million dollars in property (which was all started just from your original investment). Basically why stop at the 3 mill you have now :-) Make it grow effortlessly with this idea :-)

yes, but he wants an income with low risk. a start up company doesn't fit the profile. it typically takes 2-3 years for some to turn a profit and there's a high failure rate for start ups.
could be a good idea to put a few hundred grand into something like that if there was a solid business plan in place, a good management team and other investors as well.
Originally posted by quiet the funniest thing is - i've talked to my accountant, and my bank manager and the person who is handling my (at this point small) investments beyond my cash accounts.
none of them seem to be able to give me solid advice. any Canadians who will recommend an investment firm? anyway, i'm going to bed...
I don't know from which planet you come from... you have over 2 M and did not invest yet?
You can place 1 M per year at a safe 4% and make $40,000 income per year. If you already paid the house, cars, etc... you don't need more than $40,000 per year to live and travel.
Go with BMO Nesbitt Burns, VIP clients, one of the best NA's full service investment firms. Tell them what you want, sit back and relax.
Fuck real estate... it's asking for responsabilities. You want that?

planet earth, actually
i have the majority of my money in a premium rate savings account at 2.75% right now.
makes pretty good interest, while keeping all of my money completely liquid, and requiring nothing in terms of work. i'm just looking for ideas that do a little better than a bank account, if it's possible without hassles/much risk - while i focus on priorities other than money for a couple of years.
i have a little less than 6 figures in low risk mutual funds, and all it's done is slowly lose money. i don't really trust investment advisors (at least the ones i've talked to)
thanks for all the replies. very interesting and varied opinions...

I haven't heard of Swiss banks paying 8%, I inquired about swiss banks 2 years ago and there interest rates were about 3%, I think they hold your money secure but keep the interest for themselfs.
Maybe times have changed but $18,000 startup farkkkkkk

you can make more with your money in an ing account
A friend of mine invested in properties worth around 80k 10 years ago, today they are worth around 175k, in the mean time he was renting it out to tenants and made some descent cash (this was in the southern UK) just research house prices and you can easily get a lot back, but as someone else said don't put all your eggs in one basket

Quiet, 2.75% is really bad, or at least it is from other countries points of view. Is that really the best you can get in the USA? I knew rates were low but not that low. New Zealand gives me 5.7% for my money and I get 5% for my Australian money I have stored here all in normal banks. At 2.75% I can see why your looking elsewhere.
What about Canadian?? What % do they give you there? I'm just amazed, I get 2.75% for my chequing account
I too don't trust investment advisors either.
Because they are in it for themselfs not for you, I mean if the market goes up they make money if it goes down they make money, and you only make money if it goes up.
