Do you buy art for your home?

and if so, what types of pieces do you enjoy the most?

I bought 4 nice pieces today... a wall piece, a very large interesting vase, and the other two I'm not ready to share just yet....

but I love them all.... nothing finer than making a nice new addition to the home.

i do... i have an original picasso etching, (#4 of 175 -- he melted the plate they used to replicate it, hence leaving the 175 prints 'originals') called La Femme Dissident ... actually my exwife has it now...

in thailand i buy statues.... have buddha statues, naked women holding gold pottery on their head.... a wooden elephant, multiple nude sculptures...

The vase is the one that's really giving me a woody though... I struck gold with that one.... it's perfect in here.

Most of the art on my walls is my own. I have a couple of sweet pieces my uncle did that I inherited.

I have a couple of Thomas Kinkade artist proofs (canvas not litho), a Thomas Landry limited edition canvas, and some Chihuly pieces. My office walls are covered with cat/kitten limited editions.
My bedroom is beach/ocean/nautical with a huge old sailing vessel pic above the headboard of my bed. Of all I enjoy collecting glass pieces.. besides the Chihuly's I have stuff from Charles Lofton and others.

                                Chihuly's stuff is so yummy.

I just recently took up glass engraving. In fact, a friend auctioned off a pair of my wine goblets last night. I can't wait to find outwhat they sold for.

I actually got to have dinner with Chihuly at the Boathouse (the showplace and hotshop on Seattle's Lake Union) last year. He cooked spaghetti for the whole group and then gave us the grand tour.

I love my ocean/boating themed bedroom. I have a monster dark cherry sleighbed that fits well as with the pics of sailing vessels, lighthouses, harbors, etc. I've got a mirror that's framed as an old time ships wheel, some large frosted glass shells and about 10 glass sailboats around the room.

have you ever tried painting yourself amp?

I have with acrylic. fucking amazing how you can match the exact color you want. I tried it once... bad thing is you have to be a real picasso when it comes to paintings.

I have a fake monet btw.

We've got a number of Australian landscapes - all original but not by any noted artists - around the house. My partner is keen on kookaburras and we have two oils and a water color by various artists hanging around the place too.

We also have a very large charcoal nude done by a local art student who works by laying the 'canvas' on the floor and doing the drawing on her hands and knees. It is really quite a talking point.

An aboriginal artist gave my partner a large dot painting that we have yet to hang. Dot paintings are incredibly intricate works that are really eye-catching.

We've never purchased statuary because we move every couple of years and are always concerned that pieces like that don't travel well.

I thought you were going to say that the problem was washing the paint off after you'd finished

that sounds incredible..... would love to see a pic sometime....

I got turned on to the ocean life idea the first time I came to Maui, and now, it only seems right to do it.... and with the shape of the upper floor, and the view out the back wall of glass, it fits perfectly in there..... I have two nice large wall pics of humpback whales to start, very blue..... a local artist here did a turtle piece in the floor..... and as you descend to the lower level it turns to tropical..... sepia tone Hawaiian prints, the new vase, tons of greenery..... would love to get my hands on a sold out Tahitian David Kohn piece..... but it'll never happen.

We've never purchased statuary because we move every couple of years and are always concerned that pieces like that don't travel well.

you're right.... they don't travel well at all. I was terrified the whole trip home with that vase....

I love great art. I have one of those really cool tapestries of dogs playing poker, a sweet alien crossing sign, and a great watercolor print of Bigfoot. Oh, yeah, I've got a jackalope too which adds a nice touch of class to the place.

We have a few Michael Dumas's and a bunch of other artists... my husband loves Wolves and we have a lot of wolf paintings/sculptures. Actually, his entire famiyl are artists (his father carves and does stained glass, his uncle does these pictures all from little dots, his aunt carves and paints...his grandmother even paints/carves/sculpts, they're all INCREDIBLY talented) and we have a lot of their work around the house too... We also have a bunch of limited run paintings etc, but I couldn't tell you the artists... The hubby had them long before I did and apparently his mother bought most of them... she was a real estate agent and an art connesseur. SHe's got impeccable taste though. The rest of the stuff on our walls is mostly my prints... kids pictures, landscapes, etc.

I also have some oilpaintings of some finnish well-known artists (pretty odd..I think I'll snatch a pic and attach it to the end of the post). Then I have some persian silk carpets (dunno if that counts as art..but it's pretty ;))

I have a monster dark cherry sleighbed that fits well as with the pics of sailing vessels, lighthouses, harbors, etc. I've got a mirror that's framed as an old time ships wheel, some large frosted glass shells and about 10 glass sailboats around the room.
That's funny my place is decorated like that too -- tho probably not as nice It came furnished... I got a wierd barometer, big wooden fish, rope mirrors, Captain Nemo clock, etc. but I put most of all that lighthouse/seashell crap in my closet because I found it tacky or maybe just too feminine ... Still when people come over they feel like they are on a boat which is cool hehe...

I bought a large (6' long x 3' high) Oriental folding screen, a landscape all in golds and greens with a black laquered frame, at an estate sale. It's gorgeous, fits in with the color scheme of my living room. I also love vintage French advertising art, so I have prints of that style hung all over the place. My decor is pretty eclectic, so it's a mix of the Oriental stuff and vintage ads, plus some framed quilt squares in complementary colors, lots of brocade pillows, some Goddess sculptures, stuff like that. It sounds like it would clash, but it all somehow works.

Currently I've bought a few pieces just because I liked them, but I'm thinking about collecting as an investment. Anyone have any experience?
