Mass arrests of Muslims in LA

"US immigration officials in Southern California have detained hundreds of Iranians and other Muslim men who turned up to register under residence laws brought in as part of the anti-terror drive.

Reports say between 500 and 700 men were arrested in and around Los Angeles after they complied with an order to register by 16 December."

"We are getting a lot of telephone calls from people. We are hearing that people went down wanting to co-operate and then they were detained."

This is a generalization, but what is a fact is that a large portion of the Iranians that moved to the U.S. moved here to escape the fundamentalist overthrow of Iran. Which would make them secular and largely against the kind of people that become terrorists. So, why do we want to piss off a large group of Muslims that are pro-secular Islam when that's the kind of thinking our society believes in?

One-way would be to combat the idea that Islamic fundamentalists have fostered in the world that the U.S. is anti-Muslim. Twisty might be, but a lot of us believe in religious freedom for everyone. Targeted to muslims of certain counties only ( not from Saudia Arabia wich was the country of the majority of the 9/11 highjackers).

eros, my point is that the INS is a joke. They enforce these laws when it suits them. I agree everyone that wants to become an American should go through the proper process. However, in this case they are just using the INS laws to detain otherwise productive people.

There is a place near where I live where illegals from mostly Central America just line up on the streets to get picked up for 1$ an hour jobs. They are illegal but they are tolerated because the cheep labor helps American businesses. It's a double standard based upon the curcumstances.

When the Irish Repulican Army was at it's most deadly and America was it's #1 place to get money, did we ever hear of Irish people being rounded up for questioning and deportation? Or were they asked to register? Of course not because the Irish have been here for a long while and they are white.

If we allow the government to just make sweeping moves like this without any resistance, it's a slippery slope. Next it will be Americans of Muslim heratage. I know that would make a lot of bigots out there happy, but it would really be an erosion of our freedom

It was done for muslims, because after 9/11 muslims are required to be registered. There are no laws saying others must be or im sure they would have used that to find the illegals among them too.
