    Hundreds of Muslim Immigrants Rounded Up in Calif.

    LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hundreds of Iranian and other Middle East citizens were in southern California jails on Wednesday after coming forward to comply with a new rule to register with immigration authorities only to wind up handcuffed and behind bars.


    Shocked and frustrated Islamic and immigrant groups estimate that more than 500 people have been arrested in Los Angeles, neighboring Orange County and San Diego in the past three days under a new nationwide anti-terrorism program. Some unconfirmed reports put the figure as high as 1,000.


    The arrests sparked a demonstration by hundreds of Iranians outside a Los Angeles immigration office. The protesters carried banners saying "What's next? Concentration camps?" and "What happened to liberty and justice?."

                  The arrests were part of a post Sept. 11 program that requires all males over 16 from a list of 20 Arab or Middle East countries, who do not have permanent resident status in the United States, to register with U.S. immigration authorities.
                  If you come to the U.S., have a visa, apply for citizenship, otherwise get the fuck out. We don't need you or want you here.

                                                      It has been said that the INS is about 18 months behind on processing paper work. At least some, if not most of these people, are making an effort to be legal but the INS is a dis-organized agency. Having said that I do not have a problem with detaining non-citizens until their status can be clarified even though, if the INS has to be depended upon for the clarification, they will probably be detained for months. There has been talk for years of re-organizing the INS or even abolishing the INS and starting a new, fresh agency, but thus far it continues to be little more than talk. Our government and your tax dollars at work.

                                                          these people came in to the INS thinking that they were going to register. On good faith. Do you really think Terrorists would register themselves with the INS ?? Most of these people have been waiting for the INS to give them an appointment so that they can become legal, but the waits are anywhere from 9 Months to 5 years to get an appointment. If they were Vietnamese they would get assylum right away. These people have kids that have been born in this country while waiting for INS to give them an appointment.

                                                                                                  Some of these people may be in the process of getting political asylum which can take up to 8 years. In the mean time, the government turns a blind eye to them being illegal as long as they are upstanding people. Until they decide it's a good idea to round them up and question them. I agree with you, KC, if immagration laws are to be enforced, they should be done so across the board, not just when they want to question 500 people.

                                                                                                                                                                              If this is true this is no way near the same as the Japanese Internment during WWII.

                                                                                                                                                                              In WWII American citizens of Japanese decent were interned in camps, mostly for financial gain as they lost property, crops, businesses to the locals in their community.

                                                                                                                                                                              They were not living here illegally, they had not overstayed their visas and were not wanted for crimes as they claim that these middle easter individuals are.

                                                                                                                                                                              So fuck all you pc wannabes.

                                                                                                                                                                              I think anyone...and I repeat...ANYONE at this point who is in violation of such things should be detained and then deported.

If the article is based in fact, all those who are being detained had violated the laws of this country in one way or another. Personally, I have no problem whatsoever with locking them up until such time as we can determine their exact status. Better safe than sorry... especially after 9/11.

They enforce these laws when it suits them. I agree everyone that wants to become an American should go through the proper process. However, in this case they are just using the INS laws to detain otherwise productive people.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  There is a place near where I live where illegals from mostly Central America just line up on the streets to get picked up for 1$ an hour jobs. They are illegal but they are tolerated because the cheep labor helps American businesses. It's a double standard based upon the curcumstances.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  When the Irish Repulican Army was at it's most deadly and America was it's #1 place to get money, did we ever hear of Irish people being rounded up for questioning and deportation? Or were they asked to register? Of course not because the Irish have been here for a long while and they are white.

                                                                                                                                                                                                  If we allow the government to just make sweeping moves like this without any resistance, it's a slippery slope. Next it will be Americans of Muslim heratage. I know that would make a lot of bigots out there happy, but it would really be an erosion of our freedom

                                                                                                                                                                                                      One of the things that makes the U.S. so great is the diversity in culture and races. No doubt about it. But we don't need to babysite people who are here illegally. And if detaining these people in the name of "illegally being here" so be it. That's a risk they took to live here. I'm fine with the gov. exploited a loophole. It sucks to be a Iranian or a Middle Eastern citizen living in the U.S. (note they were Iranian, or Middle Eastern CITIZENS, not U.S. citizens). But that's a risk they took by over extending their welcome.
