    Gangs of New York

There's been a lot of hype surrounding this movie. I think the release date was pushed back several times due to final editing problems etc...
Anyone planning on seeing it? Daniel Day Lewis looks like he's put in a stellar performance, but I am not sure about DeCaprio.

    Don't underestimate DiCaprio.

Yes, we alll hate him for Titanic, but still he's an insanely good actor. From what I've seen in the trailer, DiCaprio seems to be awesome in this movie. Doesn't look twinkish in this movie you know, won't have screaming and crying girls from this flick with that fucked up NYC oldschool look hehe

I love Scorcese films. I saw the trailers for this last Dec. and said WTF an entire year to wait. Hope its worth the wait. BTW DeCaprio is a fucking wanker. :

I am not sure what is worse, DeCaprio playing anything but a shaved twink for hire OR Ben Affleck as DareDevil.

What next? Woody Allen as the Hulk?

DiCaprio doesn't convince me from what I've seen in the trailers, but I will probably take my lady to see this movie anyway. I wonder if this will be the leading contender for Oscars this year or if it will be another film...

"DiCaprio doesn't convince me from what I've seen in the trailers"

Yea, that is the thing. If he is not convincing then the whole movie could be a bust.

Maybe he dies in the end?

Speaking of DiCaprio, what about the other movie hes int hats being released nearly the same time, 'Catch Me if You Can'.

That is one movie I will DEFINETELY see because I had read the book when I was in middle school, and it has to be one of the coolest books I ever read.

Its a true story about a conman who was the youngest to make the FBIs most wanted list (I think he was in his late teens). This guy was awesome, Frank Abagnale (sp?) .. he could go anywhere and become anything he was so good. Since he was always being tracked down he would assume new identites and new jobs like nothing - and when I mean jobs I mean damn, I remember reading how he had ran up in a hospital and was pretending to be a fucking surgeon and shit and got away with that.

I hope they did this movie good cause the book was really cool, especially being true and all.

I forgot the endeding how he got caught but I know he ended up working for the FBI. Crazy shit!

DiCaprio was a fag in Titanic, but has anyone here seen The Basketball Diaries? That's a crazy movie. Gangs of New York is going to be great, Scorsese is the mother fucking man.

I write reviews for a site just in the beginning stages of development (but having the site makes seeing a movie a 100% tax deduction!). Anyway, feel free to visit the site (http://www.PDXunderground.com). The main page and movie review page are just about the only halfway functional parts of the site. To save you the trouble of finding it, here's my review of Gangs of New York:

'If you're like me, you've probably seen previews for this movie and wondered, "Did those guys really wear such funny hats?" Somehow, I have to think that even back in the mid-1800's (1846, to be exact), a stovepipe hat 16" high would have looked pretty hilarious. But then I look around and see wannabe gangsta guys with jeans below their butt cheeks, and I realize that gang membership can take its toll on fashion sense. Anyway, this movie is the story of Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) and William "Bill the Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis, who is reported to be retired and studying the art of shoemaking). Vallon witnesses Cutting murder his (Vallon's) father in a turf war and the rest of the movie is a revenge story overlaid on the Civil War and the gelling of the political pudding in New York City. We learn, if the film is correct, that not all northerners were virtuous anti-slavers and that many were quite conscious of race, ethnicity, and social caste. That underrated comic actress, Cameron Diaz, here plays a "hooker with a heart of gold" character quite well, despite the part having only occasional comedic glimmers. As with so many of Scorsese's films, GONY seems to take no ethical position, simply laying out the ugly and bloody facts with great cinematographic expertise. Tammany Hall, a mere word to me in the past, here does take on some life, as New York struggled to rise out of the chaos of ethnic and class conflict, with the Irish emerging victorious. Strangely, almost every ethnicity one thinks of in "traditional" NYC is here, except for the Jews and Italians. Perhaps they came later. At almost 3 hours, the movie is quite a bit longer than normal, but due to the deft directorial hand of Martin Scorsese, the risk you'll have to leave the theatre to pee away some of that 48-ouncer you brought into the theater is much greater than that you'll fall asleep during the showing. There might be a Best Movie or Best Director nomination coming Scorsese's way here, but I think Frida and The Two Towers have the inside track there. A Best Actor nomination for Day-Lewis is more likely. The costumes, sets, and special effects are all first class, but I'm sure The Two Towers is more likely to grab those awards even if this film is nominated. Still, a way above average movie from one of the greatest directors never to have received an Oscar for his directing.'

I saw "Gangs of NY" last week... GREAT MOVIE, but a bit long.

Tonight I saw "Catch Me If You Can".... not that great (a little boring) and too long also.

                                                  Nice review, Unseen.

As I understand it, the events in the background of GONY are factual. A great book about it is "Low Life" by Luc Sante. It's the history of early New York but without conventional topics (like the rich, politicians, religious groups) and instead it's about things like bars, drugs, prostitution, mental illness, crime, etc.)
