YAH! My new comp is coming today!

After 3 long years of this horrible Compaq Presario 7470 which has sucked ass from the day I got it, I finally said screw it and bought the parts for a new comp 2 weeks ago. My brother is bringing them here today.

    DIE COMPAQ! DIE!!!!

Congrats, FATPad! Hope everything works out better than you planned.

I keep meaning to build a PC, but I never did a complete assembly before. Even though I've taken apart/assembled all sorts of crap in my life, I am leery of doing a PC from scratch.

Have you done it before, or has your brother? Let me know how it goes.

I just order this case from coldconcept.com. Should hopefully be here Monday.

                http://thermaltake.com/products/cases/5000a.htm

I know what I'm getting for all the other parts except the motherboard and the RAM.

Any ideas on what is a good choice?

I want something that supports P4 with hyperthreading.

I got a Compaq Presario laptop and it works fine.

But I must say the new Linux server in the new office runs 4 terminals off it and it's absolutely fantastic. We can scan and use Photoshop at the same time.

Dell may ave stupid ads, but their computers still rock. Of course, you have to choose your parts carefully, but when you do, you get really good shit and you know it's not gonna break down. Been runninb on a Dell for almost 2 years and I still haven't had any problems with it, still working as new.

                            Onboard 100BT and 56k

No floppy drive, which is kinda strange.

Not a power machine or anything, but quick enough. Shrug.

                                Fatpad,

What was wrong with the Compaq? Why do people always hate
Compaq so much... At least it is durable because it did last for
                                3 yrs right?

My next pc is going to be a Hewlett Packard. I can barely open up my box let alone build a pc

I've had my current computer for over 2 and a half years and it's starting to kill me here. I paid $3300 for it when I bought it, so I'm trying to squeeze the life outta it, ha ha ha.

I bought the thing when the 1-ghz CPUs first came out and I guess that it did feel good having the top of the line processor at the time, but now the 3-ghz processors are out, so i think that it's time for a new system, he he he.

I don't know about that. I've heard so many bad stories about their computers... Sure, they look cool, but you can build a computer with the same configuration as one of theirs for about 1000 - 1500$ less if you just buy the parts separatedly. I've heard many people complain about incompatibilities between the parts they put together, and a total lack of technical support

But maybe it's just a small minority that likes to shout out loud...

I'll agree with you on that, that's what I'm gonna do, build my own, so I know what's going into it. Most of the computers in the retail stores and advertised online store specials like Dell and Gateway that look like deals suck because they don't have the greatest parts in them. I guess online, you can always customize the things, which is good.

Last year, my brother wanted to buy a Dell and saw an ad for an $800 system asking me if it was worth it. Well, I took the thing and customized it up to just under $1100, he wasn't happy about the extra costs, but I told him that I couldn't let him buy the thing unless he put in the extra upgrades, ha ha ha.

It's kinda like computer that Wal-Mart sold in their "Day After Thanksgiving" sale. It was a 2-ghz Celeron (why would ya want a celeron, ha ha ha) and the damn thing DOESN'T even have an AGP slot, which nowadays AGP is what you need if you wanna put in a high performance video card, so there's gonna be THOUSANDS of people opening up their computers, eventually realizing that they wanna do some intense gaming, so they're gonna open up the case and shit their pants when they see that there's NOT an AGP slot in the thing, he he he.

I'd reccomend places such as www.newegg.com for buying parts online - good service and decent prices.

If you're looking for a good workhorse for veyr cheap, pick up a P4 Northwood 1.6A Chip, MSI Ultra Aru-845 motherboard, PC 2100 memory and throw it in a roomy case with about 4 fans.

With the stock cooler, the 1.6 overclocks to 2.2Ghz with no addiitional hardware (just increase the FSB in the bios) and you can't beat the price.

When building your own machine though, make sure you have the one bit of kit that can save you hundreds of dollars in damages:

The $3 Radio Shack Anti-Static wrist strap.
