Best 2D _PCI_ cards for design?

Trying to hook up 3 monitors over here. I have a nvidia Geforce MX400 in the AGP slot.. its ok I spose. And a matrox millenium II for a PCI... its sort of weak @ 8megs, but I don't do much on the 2nd screen except designs.

Now what I want to do is expand over to the 3rd monitor on my gamer box as well...

So does anyone have any good recomendations for a _PCI_ card that has awesome _2D_ capabilities that wont start freaking out when I have 42 windows up, loaded down with fat psd files?

I think I'll probably get two of them.

I did try a matrox G450 dual head, but in win2k it doesn't pop up as two seperate monitors in the display settings, its just one loooooooong screen. Very weak.

I sell matrox boardsets, and would advice you to buy the G550 - the new version of 450.

about the "two seperate monitors" you just need to install the matrox suite - it will do it for you.

another card is ATI8000 - it lets you have 8 differnt "desktops" as well - you change it by pressing a little icon beside the system-watch in the bottom right corner

I have a Matrox G550 and it works very good, the best 2D acceleration you can find for $100 ... the 3D kinda sux but I'm not a gamer so there's not a problem for me...

Don't those new Matrox Parhelias allow 3 monitors at once? Or is that the same as the 550?

yes - the 512 model. Wanna run at 3840 x 1024 @ 32bpp ?

I had an ATI 7500 .. that card was a nightmare for me... it works like shit on 1600x1200, so I'm done with ATI.

I understand that the matrox suite will do it (I had it installed), but its a software version of it & would not allow seperate monitor drivers, refresh rates or resolutions in windows 2000 (only in windows 98 from what I read on the web).

I don't know about XP.

Can you confirm that you can setup seperate drivers, resolutions & refresh rates PER MONITOR with a G550 (which is AGP only right?) in WINDOWS 2000? There is a bug or something with the way windows 2000 handles dual monitors & that "Dualhead(tm)" technology that doesn't allow (at least for the g450) individual displays recogonized by windows display properties.

Im using the ATI FireGl 8000 on all our editing stations - never had a problem. In my own PC i have a ATIradeon 9700 pro - again no problems. But they use to have problems with their drivers - but no me

See thats what I'm talking about -- 3840x1024, thats across 2 or 3 screens or whatever. That's weak. I want completely seperate mointors, resolutions & refresh rates.

one of the main reasons for this is I like to QUICKLY right click & change the resolution of one of my screens to 800x600 and 1024x768 so I can see what they will look like to surfers in these resolutions. The Matrox 3rd generation StretchieScreen(tm) technology sucks for that.

Yes

Run servicepack 2 + the latest suite from matrox's webpage, and the problem is fixed - TRUELY.
We have sold about 40 Video-editingsystems with that board :-)

it was an example - read the documentation on their website:

Cool thanks for the tips. It doesn't matter much though. I get conflicts with that board in my Dell with the Nvidia AGP card.

It sais:

Plug & Play configuration error

when it posts. I found very minimal information about it searching the web & what I did find didn't help much. This is a G450 dualhead 32meg PCI I'm talking about btw.

try to move it to another slut, because it sounds like a IRQ conflict.
Win2000 runs "shared IRQ" but that is not cool on the grafix card.
Depending on the Motherboard in your dell, you should be able to fix it by allocating a seperat IRQ to each of the boards.

Yeah I tried everything. All slots & when bios/cmos finally pops up, the matrox card is missing from the PCI device list (its disabled) however, windows still sees it when it finally boots. It's just waaaay too much of a reboot delay to be acceptable (while it hangs there on the "plug & play configuration error" screen.

I don't think there is much that can be done other than go pure Matrox. Like get the G550 AGP & G450 PCI or something.
