Check out the P96 Golf http://www.airsportaviation.com/
These are classified as ultra light, so the license requirement isnt as strict ! I used to Fly back in the 70's but never got past ground school ! The P96 Golf is a really neat machine around 70k Canadian apx 45k Us so it is affordable . But as I mentioned the best thing is the regs for a license arent as strict. So this will be my next project.

You need an 800 foot run to get off the ground. It says you need an 800 foot ground roll to land, but I've never been able to do that, more like 1500 feet. This plane has such a "clean" design that it does not like to slow down, and I've discovered that its much easier to just come in fast, keep it in ground effect and float down the runway until the plane slows enough to settle in for a perfect landing.

If you tell me your location I can tell you every airport within 100 miles and how long thier runways are. Most airports that i've been to have at least 3500 foot runways, but thats not always the case.

If I can't keep it locally I would not want to make the purchase. I am pleased that you informed me that at least a 1500 foot runway is more reasonable. I will make some calls to the local airport Monday and make some inquires. The airport is twenty-five miles from me and I can deal with that distance. I do have a question for you. How would I go about finding a qualified instructor for that particular aircraft?

Most instructors that i know wont even fly in an experimental plane... damn chickenshits. but you can find one, just look around in the phone book or newspaper. I have an instructor here that loves to fly in this plane but nobody else will try it. Some instructors have the mentality that if it wasnt built by cessna or piper that it just isnt safe. and some people say ford is better than chevy... its all a matter of opinion.

this plane is just as safe as any other that I've flown in, but it does require more skill than your typical training plane such as a cessna 152, but its also faster and more responsive.

I've still not flown an experimental plane. I certainly feel more comfortable in a Cessna or Piper, because they have a seriously successful track record. I'll fly in an experimental at some point.. but I can understand the concerns instructors might have about flying a new students experimental ;)

the king, you could always train in a cessna first.. Then have an instructor help you transition into the experimental. I'm sure they'd be more likely to do that then start from scratch in an experimental.

Thanks for the link. My local airport isn't even listed, but there are two aiports within 60 miles that have more than enough runway length.

I always use airnav member reviews to decide which FBO I rent planes from when I'm on the road. It's great.. the reviews have been very accurate so far.

They just added that weather info... I'm sure it's not considered legal weather by the FAA, but as long as it's current it looks pretty damn useful!

I wonder what they would do to me if I landed here:
NASA Shuttle Landing Facility Probably shoot me out of the sky! I just heard the sonic booms from the Shuttle a few hours ago actually!

15,000 feet long - i believe its one of, if not the largest runway in the world...

Actually.. They issue TFR's (temporary fligght restrictions) during shuttle launch and landings.. I'm not sure about the airspace during other times.

If you were in the air in that vicinity and had an honest to god emergency.. You could declare an emergency and most likely would be given permission to land there and (assuming the emergency was valid and not something caused by gross negligence) the FAA most likely wouldn't take your ticket.

The priviledges that a pilot in distress gets is pretty incredible.

I worked the phone today and I am going to pass on buying the airplane. After having made inquiries to several airports and flight instructors it just gets too complicated. I love the aircraft and felt like a kid in a candy store when I saw it, but as I have stated there are just to many complications involved, not the least of which is the physical condition I am in. I have a seriously screwed up back. Time to return back to reality.

You should still get up for an intro flight at least... It's great!
