My grandmother, when she was alive, had a summer house down in Brigantine. I remember we were down there in the 60's when a heavy duty storm hit and we rushed to drive home to Philly, and it was just my mom in our station wagon and I thought we were going to get wiped out for sure. You literally couldn't see the road, the rain and wind were coming down so hard.
The biggest amount of people killed by a Hurricane was in Galveston Texas back around 1908, when 11,000 got zapped by a monster storm. Guess in those days, they didn't see 'em coming.
