US college students help me out here !

In N.Ireland there is an opportunity for students from N.Ireland to be sent to an American college for a year all expenses paided.

Heres the list of american colleges that N.Ireland students have the chance to go to

    http://www.bei-ni.com/colleges.htm

If you've heard good things about any of them then could you give me your opinion on them. From the U.S students that I've already spoken to about these colleges, some of them are religious colleges, these are colleges I want to avoid !

    Any help would be appreciated

only decent school on there i recognized was BU (boston university)

the others either look like smaller local schools or religious places

bu is right in the heart of cambridge and is a pretty cool place to go it has a bigger student body than the population of n. ireland i think

What's your major going to be?

Generally colleges in the south, especially the south east, part of the nation are going to be more conservative.

Definitely do not go to Austin College (Texas) or University of Tulsa (Oklahoma)

Many of the religious ones are easy to spot by the "Wesleyn" or "Methodist" or "Baptist" or "Saint" in the name.

Thats my main worry, I have nothing against religious people but I don't fancy spending a year reading the bible and shit (no offense to religious people btw) I'm looking to go to somewhere pretty large College wise which as a normal college lifestyle

What's your major going to be?
Well I'm supposed to study Business studies but we have been told that we can basically do whatever we want, if thats the case then I'd want to study MultiMedia because thats what I'm studying at the moment, includes flash, dreamweaver, photoshop so it complements what I do online for a living pretty well.

LunaC thanz for the info on the religious stuff, quite a lot of that stuff i didn't know, I know very little about colleges in the U.S . Thats why I'm askin you guys

Wow, I skimmed through the list again and the majority of these colleges are religious. Watch out for the words: Assumption, Benedictine, Dominican, Holy Family, Immaculata, and Trinity. These colleges may just be named after other places that have religious names (Trinity could be named after the Trinity River or whatever) bu they are not good signs.

I might actually take back what I said about the University of Tulsa. It's not a religious college, just located in a conservative area. And it is a good (expensive) place. So I wouldn't exactly endorse it, but you might look at it. Not too liberal, but compared to the rest of this group...

Thanz a lot for the info man ! This is starting to sum up what I began to think after speaking to a few students from America. A religious college is something I'm really not interested in experiencing

That list of yours wasnt that great, I live in Florida - if that list of yours had Florida State University, University of Florida, University Central Florida, Miami - you would have a great time...

The reason I wanted to go on this trip was because it was all expenses paided for a year Its become pretty apparent now that this is some stupid religious trip which I'm not interested in.

When i first heard about this trip to America I immedietly though of, nice weather, hot chicks, Florida, drink, weed and fun.

if you actually want to study - go to boston
I certainly have no intention to study

I'll research this a little more but if Boston is going to be the only choice i think I'll forget about this trip

Indeed. I knew nothing about what colleges where decent in America but thanz for the info. The colleges you posted are the kind of college I would like to go to, not the shit thats on offer *But i suppose you can't expect much for free

There is an asshole in my current college class applying for this trip as well. What college from that list would you guys say would be the worst college, socially, location wise and all that good stuff.

Cause i wouldn't mind recommending that college to this asshole

just so it doesnt sound like im bashing all the schools on the list:
study all the schools, visit all their websites, im sure you'll find something cool - you only live once and with a free one year trip to america you could gain a great experience

Thanz for the advice Although this is very negative thinking, it could be a year of having a very had experience. I've heard a story of someone who hated their trip due to their location.

I think it all depends where you end up going and where i would like to go does not seem to be anywhere on the list.

You know that http://www.mcdonalds.com/corporate/...univ/index.html link isn't beginning to look too bad compared to some of the other options

If you go through them, you can probably find one whose only fault is being small, not religious. If it is otherwise in a pretty good location, such as in Florida or Califonia or near a big city in the south, and you don't really want to study, you might have a lot of fun.

As for "worst" I'd recommend anything with "Wesleyan" in the title... they are pretty strict in my experience. Girls can't wear shorts on campus, ect.

Oh, and if it were me, with the goals you have stated, I'd probably go for the one in Hawaii. It's a catholic school, but if you can put up with that in class, you can spend the rest of your time on the beach. Since you don't really care about learning, just take easy classes and enjoy the sun.

St Thomas actually may be alright, i think it's down by miami, you may have some fun in that area. Don't let the whole religious thing fool you, my ex went to catholic college and she was still a party girl.

Don't let the whole religious thing fool you, my ex went to catholic college and she was still a party girl.
Oh yea i know that religious people can be great fun, i know a few religious people that are crazy when it comes to parties but then on the other hand i also know some people who are religious that seem to be Allergic to fun, but to narrow down the chance of having a crap time I like to avoid places that are quite religious

Thank you for the useful info I'll do a little research on St Thomas

Those are all east and mid west schools. All I can tell you is that Loyola in Ill is a dam good school, but you should really come out west, can't beat the weather. But wherever you choose I wish you luck.

I know a few people that went to Randolph Macon (http://www.rmc.edu/), I was considering it for a while too. It's a good school and located near Richmond, Virginia (about an hour and a half or so south of Washington D.C.).
