Modern Warfare 2' rakes in $550 million in first five days
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues its onslaught on video game sales records.
Activision says the first-person shooter grossed $550 million worldwide in its first five days of release, an entertainment industry record. The game bests previous record-holder Grand Theft Auto IV, which generated $500 million during the same timeframe in 2008.
No word yet from Activision on how many copies of the game sold globally since its arrival on November 10. According to Activision estimates obtained by the Los Angeles Times, about 8 million copies were sold.
The amount of online activity on Xbox Live is equally astonishing. Citing statistics from Microsoft, Activision says more 5.2 million online multiplayer hours were logged and 11 million achievements unlocked on the first day. Also, more than 2.2 million unique players tried the game at launch. Numbers for the PlayStation 3 and PC were not included.
Last week, Activision announced Modern Warfare 2 sold 4.7 million copies on the first day of release in North America and the U.K., grossing about $310 million.
