who likes Arby's?

i'm very disillusioned! there's a story on MSN's business section about Arby's being the big loser in the fast food sector in this recession. I've always wondered where old people go and do on the Internet - apparently they read new articles on sites like MSN and then post 'back in the good old day's comments.

so anyway, i've always liked Arby's, for fast food it's a change from burgers, pizza or subs. the meat always looked to me like it was real roast beef. well a bunch of people commenting on the Arby's story claim they worked for them when they were younger and jesus they describe what that 'roast beef' is and how it's manufactured and they swear it's not an urban legend.

I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

It is roast beef and it is sliced in store. It just is packaged the same way turkey breast is packaged in deli's. They add a few roasts to a bag that are trimmed up of fat, bone, and gristle. They then vacuum pack the roast and it gets steam cooked in the bag. This causes the meats to weld together and form larger roasts or tubes of roast. It is not however frankenmeat.

I mean has anyone ever looked at the giant turkey breasts in the deli section of stores and sandwich places? Notice how they are about eight inches across in all directions and very long? That is because each package is 2-3 whole turkey breasts that went through the same process. No turkey has breasts that big.

Arby's has its problems because it is somewhat limited menu wise. Where it is not limited, it is expensive. Plus I can not recall much of a dollar menu which other places have been really ramping up and pushing.
They are very decent in my opinion. They just are not recession food and most people recall in their minds high prices, even though you can get 5 roast beef sandwiches for 5.01 plus tax (could be 6.01). I just know anything but the base roast beef sandwich costs much more. Be it the ArbyQ, the cheddar arbys, and other sandwiches.

I really like their sauces and their mocha shakes myself.

and on the topic of fast food, I was just reading about how all of the Burger King franchise affiliates are suing the mother company because they are angry that they are being forced to sell their double burgers for $1 as a part of the Burger King value meal deal

they claim that they are losing money on every burger that is sold for a dollar, while the company says they have to do it because of competition from all the other big fast food company's dollar menus

well here's this guy's recollection of the Arby's meat - and there's a Snopes story about it.
there's some truth to this dude's story, the Arby's roast beef comes in these bags filled with what the company calls 'self basting' liquid - it's a gross gelatinous type liquid. i've seen the kids at Taco Bell open up similar bags of their taco filling meat - it's incredibly gross looking.

"I used to work at Arby's as a teenager, and this is the truth: It is NOT roast beef. It is some sort of scientific abomination. First, it comes in big, clear plastic bags in the form of some kind of brown, sewer-water looking liquid with tiny bits of mystery meat in it. The whole thing was about the size of a flat basketball. they are - and reading through the comments following the MSN story that's what most people are complaining about, that there isn't a value menu like other fast food chains have and no children's menu.

i like A&W better than all of them - the problem is finding them.

Kid is just spreading more myths that he either is just fibbing about or never worked for them.

I did leave out seasoning in my deli meat explanation. Some gelatin would be released when they steam cook it in the bag. Typically they pretreat most meats before putting them in the plastic vacuum bags. Almost all have modified food starch. Some would be smoked, some rolled in black pepper, flavoring, and yes many have self basting liquid solutions poured into the bag.

Example here is a packaged turkey breast since it is easier to explain and show the oddness of the shape.

As you can see that is a giant rectangular oval of turkey breast with no bones. There of course are no turkeys running around with a breast shaped like that (go look at a fresh turkey, cooked or raw). A turkey breast is shaped like a taken apart yin-yang symbol. Each half of the symbol would represent a single side of the breast. If you take the two breasts and push the wide part (near the neck) to the thin piece (near the ass end) you will get a near rectangle. Cook it in a vacuumed sealed bag to hold it together while it cooks with some food starch or even natural proteins and they will just hold together when you take them out of the bag. They are also ready to eat right then with no extra cooking needed.

Yeah, that's true, they have no $1 menu or anything like that which is what people want now, deals.

As far as the kids menu, those people must not eat there much because I know my local Arbys does have a kids menu, you can get a ham & cheese sandwich, roast beef, or popcorn chicken in a kid's meal, which even comes with the usual bag and toy.

Yeah, A&W is pretty damn good, there used to be a couple in my area, but they closed down years ago

My wife and I went to the local Arby's drive thru a couple weeks ago, we both ordered large roast beef with fries, and ice tea. We pulled around to the window, and the total was 15 bucks or so, expensive for drive thru food, then after I paid the guy told me that they were out of horsey and bbq sauce. I asked him, how the hell can you be out of horsey sauce? Isn't this arby's? He claimed since they merged with Wendy's that their suppliers have changed and they have trouble getting their orders.

I like Arby's, but they are so damn expensive. They seriously need to adjust their prices. I can see why they are the loser in the fast food game. Plus there is only one Arby's in my area while I have like 12 Burger Kings in the same area.

A&W broke my heart when they dropped the Coney Fries from their menu. they still have them where you are?

when i was a kid our next door neighbor was a close friend of an executive at A&W - and each summer he'd get boxes of the A&W hamburger patties from his friend and damn they tasted even better grilled on the BBQ.

the other reason Arby's got hurt worse by the recession than other fast food giants is that they have the most locations in Midwest states hit harder by the economy - Michigan, Ohio and some other nearby state.

I always wondered how they processed this stuff...... I learned something today on GFY... WOW!! Thanks, seriously.

As for the initial question. We love Arby's.... but like you say, After Shock, it's pretty pricey. When all of the kids were at home and this was a few years ago, we would all go there to grab some takeout and it would cost us an easy $50.. and this was a few years ago for 6 of us. I can't imagine what it would be now. We haven't been there in a good while except for a random stop to get my husband and I a sandwhich and noticed it is still very expensive.... god forbid we took all of my kids and us there NOW!! lol

But I do love their roast beef, even if it is a bunch of processed garbage, it's good garbage. lol

I worked at arby's when I was 17 and the uncooked roast beef is a big bag of brown goo. If you dropped it on the floor it would totally splat like a thick gravy or something, that's why it's in a plastic bag.

the thing about fast food for adults these days is that it's no longer cheap, you can't walk out of a fast food place if you're hungry and walk out for less than 7-8 bucks or more, for that you can get a good meal at a good mom and pop restaurant.

when i was a kid, those little regular McDonald's hamburgers were 20 cents, if i rifled through my dad's suit pockets waiting to go to the dry cleaners, looked under the sofa seat cushions and the car seats I could always find about a dollar worth of change and it would get me 2 of those little hamburgers, fries and an orange drink. and for $1.05 i could get a small pizza from a great pizza shop, no toppings though other than cheese.

Taco Bell is still the cheapest and that's why TB is always popular with young teenagers.

Well that and they merged many of their locations into buildings that were also KFC locations (another expensive fast food.). Can not see that helping A&W. Their menu out here is a few hot dogs of poor quality, burgers, fries, and drinks. I really think KFC sucks away sales. Too often people would change their mind I imagine and get KFC and an A&W drink and maybe side.

I really think and I believe the stats also show it by growth, that Wendy's has the best under a dollar menu and cheap items. They do have some expensive burgers but Taco Bell has expensive items too.

Wendy's selection is amazing and they are really leading the pack with their menu. I can actually eat full meals off their 99 cent menu. Heck my favorite meal combo is the following.
Meal: Small chili (cheese and onion on side), sour cream and chive potato, Jr. bacon cheese burger (add mustard, hold lettuce and tomato), value iced tea (with lemon).
I prep the potato by adding the condiments, add a few spoonfuls of chili to it and half of the cheese. Add remaining cheese to the chili with the chili oil and the onions. Spoon 2 spoon fulls of the chili onto the bacon cheese burger. Then I will crumble a cracker into the rest of the chili. Then it is all ready to eat.
That meal combo is 3.96 plus any tax

Sometimes I will add a ceaser salad. It is eaten as is. Sometimes I skip the bacon burger and go with the double stack - all still on value menu.

I also love that on Wendy's combo meals that you can alter the meal. Instead of being stuck with fries (face it when driving a small distance before eating fries are gross). You can have a side salad, a ceaser salad, a small chili, or a sour cream and chive potato. You also can get bottled water with any combo.
Kids meals are even better. Instead of fries you can get mandarin oranges. Instead of soda or standard beverage you can get chocolate low fat milk, low fat milk, or even a Jr. Frosty.

their new ad campaign i think is a winner - people say the jingle is annoying but that tells me it's being effective, i hear this jingle a ton

The biggest indication of the processing of the meat, is it's shiny / glazed appearance. The slices will have texture, veins, fat, etc. -- Arby's meat has none of that.

As an efficiency -- Arby's most likely orders reformed (mechanically recovered) meat that is shaped is it can be easily and cost effective sliced. It is pre-cooked (not likely roasted by an traditional method), with flavorings / enhancers, and just has to be boiled / steamed when it is unfrozen at the outlet. Then placed on the slicer by minimum waged staff and put in a bun and sold.

if that's the case that's ridiculous - if you can't make a profit when you're charging 5 bucks for a real roast beef sandwich then you should be out of business.

i get roast beef subs occassionally from Subway and Mr Sub and it's real roast beef, obviously pre sliced, flavored and frozen - both taste pretty bad actually and if not for mustard and cheese i would never eat them. Arby's tastes better than them.

I moved my sites to Vacares Hosting. I've saved money, my hair is thicker, lost some weight too! Thanks Sly!

I tried to explain how it is cooked and formed. They trim away all fat like I said. They would not use prime cuts so there would not be that much marbling. It IS NOT ROASTED, it is steam cooked in the plastic vacuum bag I am almost 100% positive. I hope you do not find veins in your roasts ever though man. Veins are surface things. They would add flavorings, and proteins.

Go look in a store deli soon. Check the sliced roasts. Not only will you often see a shiny look to it, often you will see almost a rainbow like you would on an oil slick. I do think they "roast" it in store but could be wrong. It just is almost 100% or 100% pre cooked by steam before it arrives.

The 'ingredients' of the Arby's corned beef let's us know it is 100% processed; "Corn Beef, Water, Salt, Sodium Lactate, Sugar, Sodium Phosphate, Flavorings, Sodium Erythorbate and Sodium Nitrite." Corned beef is normally just beef and seasoning.

Any meat with that shiny look is processed. It is created by liquefying the meat, adding all types of flavor enhancers and stabilizers and then reforming it into a shape that can be cost effectively sliced and sold. Normally, this is done with all the bits of meat that are too small or odd shaped to package and sell as regular cuts.

Lamb is delicious, but I only meant in the way it's prepped really, a big mass of meat they take slices from.. not really a cut from the animal itself, but more how ASM was describing I thought.

Been forever since I had one, but those Arby's were addicting when I'd get one from time to time. Usually I was there for the mocha shake and curly fries though.

Wait, is arby's the one that had a mocha shake or is that taco bell? Anyway, those were good.
