Laid Off

I said it in another thread but people are tightening their belts, personal and business.

Sadly the response got drowned out by blowhard responses based on emotion and not any sort of objectiveness.

I'm sorry to hear you had a client just cut ties, most clients tend to give a reason but sometimes if they are tight on budgets, they don't want to admit it.

I am happy to see you are active here, and not only on our Discord webmaster server.

I really don't think the budget here was a problem as I had fair insights in their cash flow and spending.

Something else was a matter of which I do hope I will get a response for, just for closure for myself really. At this point money is not the problem, just myself worth and dignity.

There was a hiring pattern though for the same position, about 5 - 6 times a year I see only now.

Things are rough out there and I'm expecting will continue to be for another year with mid terms etc.

Canada will get nuked along the way but no one cares about it anyway..

A family friend of my baby mama was pulling 500-750k a year developing and doing contract work a couple years ago...

Today he is hit hard by the lack of demand... making less money than me at the moment... Does not have a single contract heading into the winter for the first time in like 15 years!

Hopefully guy has money saved because his burn rate is like 25k a month...

Rents are even dropping fast!

I'm not from the States, but Eastern Europe... burning 25k a month is mind blowing considering I was doing just above min wage annually.

There is a tight monthly schedule for me too because of life choices... though I guess you gotta hit "crap" bottom in order to bounce back eventually.

Anything that burns the regime here to the ground is welcome by me.

I have an uncle there Calgary, Alberta... never managed to meet him or my older bro and sis because of life circumstances...

The money being thrown around Canadian real estate has been crazy, the 25k/burn per month guy, I was told a story about one job he did where he was paid some ridiculous amount of money all upfront based on the fact that he does have a really good portfolio and reputation, no idea how much money he was paid, but it was supposed to be a SHITLOAD and the foreign client had their house fully furnished, toured it once in person and didn't like it, and ordered an entire second custom house in different colours like a couple blocks away for a different view of the lake. Like imagine that, you have a house built for you, tour the place once, don't really vibe with it, so you just build another house no problem. That's rich as fuck!

A year or so ago, I did a moving gig to survive where I was at a massive mansion in the Okanagan where the owner had something like 7 Ford Broncos, one in each colour they made that year. He was a real estate developer or something to do with real estate/property and also owned a Ford GT40 and a pimped out Raptor.

My mother-in-law bought a property a few years ago, never did a thing with it, forgot that she owned it, 2025 came and she got a tax bill so she decided to sell it... after everything she made 150k and never even stepped foot on the property.

Real estate is the carrot on the stick for Canadians. The alternative is being poor and overdosing on the street.

The fact that she bought the place and forgot she owns it got to me, lol

Same shit is happening here, cost of buying a new apartment here has sky rocketed as well as older ones.

A flat that barely was worth 20k euro before COVID, is being sold now at 50k in the same state... yet people here are buying it, as they feel like the prices will never go down.

That's a bubble which is gonna pop really soon imo

Hey so sorry this happened to you. In the US being laid off is a regular nightmare but in Europe it is unusual since most people keep their gigs for years and years, even if they work in a candy shop. Sign of the (bad) times.

I hope you find your way back to a new and better gig. But don't let it affect your self-esteem or dignity because it's probably not your fault in any way.

I know what you mean, all too well. I was let go a few times after getting more than perfect reviews... both online and off. Nothing sucks more than being told you are so great, only to be laid off a week later.

BUT, as they say, get up, pull up your boot straps, and keep on moving. I wish you the very best.

Yes, of course. I always try and get back up as fast as I can, sometimes it's faster than other times.
