It's pretty scary to submit all of your information to sponsors. Any horror stories about submitting your info and getting identity stolen, etc?

People have been doing this for well over 10 years. Are there any documented cases of theft or fraud due to it?

Either way, I always suggest people start a corporation of some type.

not sure about the theft or fraud thing, but wasn't there a big leak of affiliate sign-ons about a year or two ago? I forget exactly but I think a prominent member here ended up banned around the same time for slightly unrelated stuff but I remember he was working to get the word of it spread into the mainstream at the time if I recall correctly

No reason to be concerned if you run your business like a business.

Do not even need a corporation at all. Staying as a D.B.A. or a Partnership is perfectly fine. Anyone can call the IRS or fill out the paper to get a Tax ID Number (TIN) and use that to file instead of using your SS# with any US sponsor.

I don't provide mine to anyone for anything that includes utility companies, cable, etc.

Anything that makes money should be a corporation/LLC and tax #'s are sufficient.

Well, I have a horror story in the works. It involves cam studio operators (here in the usa even)...who have been using models SSN's to obtain credit and other shady things that we are just now learning about. They call themselves webmasters and use that information for fraud.

I don't think SSN's should ever be submitted unless its for tax puposes, and even then, I'd make damn sure to know exactly who at that company has access to it.

the less people who have the # the better, but just filling paperwork at a doctors office they now ask you for your ssn#

If your worrried about it just check your bank accounts, credit card accounts and your credit report daily. I think if you find out your identity is stolen right away you can get is squashed. A lot of people find out way too late when people start sending notices why they have not paid the bill, etc.

If you are located in the US (most with SSN would be of course as a no shit) you have the right to place a voluntary credit freeze on your accounts. Nobody can open lines of credit that way without your personal permission.

Now sure they could data mine enough to get all of the possible answers that the agencies may ask of your to open your credit lines up, that would be more trouble than it is worth and odds are never happen.
