You purposely left out an important fact to try and make your point.The title was a short summary of the contents of the post (that is how a title typically works). My initial post stated that the options are "buy insurance for $15,000 per year, pay a penalty tax of 2.5% of income or face a penalty of up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to five years."
That is a correct statement and you have written nothing to refute it.

Just because the feds put penalties into law doesnt mean they get enforced. Name one person in jail solely because of a 2257 violation, a law mandating 5 years in jail.
Prisons are overcrowded enough that many states release nonviolent prisoners early.
So the idea that people will do time for not buying insurance from a price gouging, claims denying insurance company...that is the true delusion in this thread.Comment

People in jail on tax evasion do so because of big money numbers, not because someone skipped out on an insurance invoice.
when the day arrives when someone goes to jail for evading healthcare taxes/penalties/insurance/whatever, bump this thread & call me wrong.
Its not going to happen. They waive time for people doing DWI, so dont think for a second anyone will sit in jail for evading health insurance/taxes/penalties/whatever.Comment

Here are two examples. Tell me how one is better than other.
During this last election I saw both of these things on the news.
Liberal- A person they were interviewing basically was explaining how Obama was going to save them and give them hope and provide for them. Forget getting a job or going back to school or working hard, they wanted Obama and the democrats to take care of them and they believed it was going to happen and that they were "owed" this. That is stupidity.
Conservative- In Ohio they talked to several people in an area that was traditionally conservative. They talked to 5-6 people during this report and every one of them said the same thing. They said that they thought Obama was the smarter guy who had better ideas and was the better choice to be president. However, they can't bring themselves to vote for anyone that is pro-choice so they were voting for McCain. When further asked they agreed that no matter how qualified a candidate is they will never vote for someone that is pro-choice. And no matter unqualified a candidate might be if they are pro-life and running against a pro-choice candidate they will always vote for that person. That is stupidity.Comment

There is money being made off of prisons and prisoners, at the cost of the tax payers, but it is not the reason there are so many people in jail.
There are so many people in jail because our legal system is political device. Many judges and most DA's in this country are elected. During election years you hear about prosecutions and you hear various other politicians brag about how "tough on crime" they are. These people all want to be elected and one of the best ways to do that is to convince the voters you will put people in jail. So when you then get elected you have to do exactly what you have said you will do or you won't get elected again. This is one of the reasons we have the death penalty. People want to know bad guys are being put in jail, it helps them sleep well at night, and these politicians are simply giving the people what they want.
That there are people making money off of it is just a byproduct of the political system.Comment

You really believe that there is a group of people who are telling DA's, police and various law enforcement to just arrest and jail people so they can make money? You really believe that we have all the laws we have on the books because this "group" wants to make more money and having more people in jail helps their bank account?
If so why is there such a shortage of jail space? Why are they always letting people slide and not sending them to jail or letting them out early because they don't have anywhere to put them? Why not invest some of this money and build new prisons or expand the existing ones?Comment

So these wealthy people have created a system that includes a bunch of laws that will put people in jail so they can make money off of them and everyone in that system just goes along with it and is not bright enough to see what is happening?
And still, if it is so lucrative why are they not building more prisons and jails? Why turn people loose that could be in jail? Surely the cost of another jail is nothing compared to what they are making off the prisoners and I'm sure they can word everything just right and get the tax payers to pay for it.Comment

Speaking of laws...it has probably been 20 years ago...that I read there were more than ten million laws/ordinances on the books nationally...from city to county to state to federal laws/ordinances. When one considers that each law/ordinance restricts something...one can wonder how we can call ourselves a free country. I have several friends that are cops and they all tell me that there are enough laws on the books that they can pull just about any car over at just about any time they want and have a legit reason for doing it. It is pretty crazy when you think about everything that is on the books out there. I'm sure a lot of these laws have never even been enforced and most people don't even know they exist.Comment

Dude we have 4% of the population and more than the world in jail and empty prisons... Do you not remember the ordeal recently where some fraud was trying to take control of one?? Our entire system is based on fraud. Why do people get released because the sheriffs department is not a part of the scam. Well in most cases anyway. ... The person with the most power within your county even more power then the president is your county sheriff. If his jail is full by these fools over doings he cuts them loose.. But you just said that there is a powerful group that is running all of this from behind the scenes as a for-profit system. They could easily build another jail or expand a jail and give a local sheriff all the jail space he could use and they in turn would make more money. But for some reason the don't.
If I have an investment that is paying off wholesale, I look for ways to grow it. If I see loopholes that are costing me money, I look to close them. Why is this "group" that is running things not doing so?Comment

Dude you give up your rights at the age of consent. In reality your rights are given up at birth with your birth cirtificate which is how you become a ward of the state. If there is a group of people out there controlling the legal system in this country and using it as a way to make money why are they not building more prisons and making more money. If you are going to go to the the effort of getting these laws passed so you can get people arrested, why would you not provide a place for them to sit in jail so you can make money?Comment

I do think the health care bill teetered out of control. Instead of passing reforms to deal with the fraud, gouging, & perverse incentives to perform more tests & procedures, the dems created another massive expansion of federal power at the same moment the deficit is at 1.6 trillion for the year.
